Empirical evidence for the non-persuasiveness of the straw man on its target
This paper addresses the degree to which straw man arguments are perceived as persuasive by their targets. A review of the literature shows that there is a consensus on the topic, stipulating that using a straw man argument is unlikely to change a person’s views. However, the experimental evidence we have so far on the straw man fallacy only covers third-person scenarios, i.e., when participants act as an audience observing an argumentative excha…
Autonomy and Argumentation
This introductory article discusses the state of the art in contemporary argumentation theory regarding the relationship between autonomy and argumentation. It introduces the contributions to the special section and discusses their relationship to each other and to the broader debate
On Halting Meta-argument with Para-Argument
The impacts of marketization on international aid
The article outlines changing US government strategies in response to growing marketization of international aid and development. As private sector US government vendors, the active, purposive role of for‐profit firms in aid distribution is difficult to appreciate from only an exploration of funding awards. The literature identifies multiple influences on vendor relationships between NGOs and for‐profit firms including new government policies and…
Fallacies of Meta-argumentation
This article argues that the theoretical concept of meta-argumentative fallacy is useful. The authors argue for this along two lines. The first is that with the concept, the authors may clarify the concept of meta-argumentation. That is, by theorizing where meta-argument goes wrong, the authors may capture the norms of this level of argumentation. The second is that the concept of meta-argumentative fallacies provides an explanatory model for a v…

This visual memoir probes the tensions and contradictions that inflect the commodity‐based relationship between a farmer and his cattle on an Irish farm. A methodological exploration of how to attend to the politics of care that animate multispecies relationships on the farm, this article examines relations of intimacy, care, and contradiction materialized in the structural manipulation of bodies for economic purposes. The attentive focus on the …
Profitability and management costs in the EU Northeast Atlantic fisheries
Fisheries management is about the steering and supervision of the exploitation of a common-property natural renewable resource. Costs inherent to fisheries management have been too often ignored, even if management expenditure represents a significant share of the landings value. This omission occurs in part because often taxpayers are the ones who bear the costs while the benefits of fisheries management are mostly reaped by the fishing industry…

Global seafood consumption footprint
To ensure food security and nutritional quality for a growing world population in the face of climate change, stagnant capture fisheries production, increasing aquaculture production and competition for natural resources, countries must be accountable for what they consume rather than what they produce. To investigate the sustainability of seafood consumption, we propose a methodology to examine the impact of seafood supply chains across national…
Collection and dissemination of fisheries data in support of the EU Common Fisheries Policy
A systematic European Union (EU)-wide data framework for the collection of fisheries data in support of the EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) was first implemented in 2002. Since that time, EU data collection regulation has undergone 2 revisions in response to evolving policy needs. The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) is responsible for conducting research and providing advice on fisheries management under the CFP, and since 2005…
The Nonprofit World
Tsars, Task Forces and Standards
Institutional processes for regulating government-nonprofit relations in the U.S. are experiencing substantial growth, particularly at the state level. First, cabinet-level nonprofit “tsars” are being appointed by state governments as point persons for communication and coordination with nonprofits. Second, high-level cross-sector task forces are being established to examine the current relations between the sectors and to recommend reforms in re…
An Australian National Compact - Something old, something new
The Australian Labor Party (ALP) formed government under Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in 2007 promising to consult with the not-for-profit sector on the development of a national compact. It was the government’s aim to forge a new settlement with the sector after eleven years of Liberal/National Coalition government during which contractual governance rather than relational governance was the norm. The provenance of the National Compact, launched in…
A New Era of Collaborative Government-Nonprofit Relations in the U.S
The growth of the nonprofit sector in the last decades and its greater salience in the delivery of public goods and services has been accompanied by the development of new institutions and processes for managing the relations between nonprofits and governments. This article documents a number of recent initiatives to strengthen government-nonprofit relations in the U.S. and analyzes the policy agendas that are driving them
Advocacy with Gloves on
This article examines the strategies used by some third sector organizations in Australia to advocate. The purpose of this article is to identify the kinds of activities that organizations in New South Wales and Queensland use to promote advocacy, the kinds of language that is used to describe these activities, and the reasons given for the particular strategies adopted. The extent to which the organizations adopt “softer” (that is more instituti…
Implications of government funding of advocacy for third‐sector independence and exploration of alternative advocacy funding models
This paper examines the effect of funding contracts on the capacity of third‐sector organizations to effectively advocate. The relationship is not simple or obvious, with some organizations reporting 'mature relationships' with particular (state) departments, and others reporting difficulty with state or federal government jurisdictions. The paper spells out the negative effects of conflating service funding and advocacy. The paper concludes by e…

The best of times, the worst of times
The recent introduction of written 'compacts' between government and community services organisations (CSOs) in Australia offers the promise of meaningful co-production of policy. However, recent research has highlighted that many in the community sector continue to perceive that there are significant constraints on their capacity to engage in advocacy. This paper examines the impact of the current governance regimes on the Australian community s…

Third sector participation in the policy process
English Do third sector organisations (TSOs) participate meaningfully in the public policy process? What factors determine their access to decision-making domains or their ability otherwise to influence political outcomes? This article presents a framework for the analysis of the participation of TSOs in the policy process based on four factors: the political opportunities offered by the polity in which they operate; the nature of the policies th…

Reorganizing in the Eighties
Faced with massive reductions in funding and increasing demands for accountability, information, and services, public organizations must not only reconsider their goals, but devise new operating styles that effectively deal with ever-increasing workloads and concomitant diminishing resources. The Gallic Chronicle Restored
The last decade has seen renewed interest in late Roman Britain and its transition to Saxon England. There have been a number of attempts to clarify the chronology of events between the collapse of the central Roman administration and the establishment of a substantial and permanent Saxon presence. These attempts at chronological certainty have, of necessity, focused upon the entries in the so-called Gallic Chronicles since these sources are the …
