Juggling with theory, evidence, practice, and real-world circumstances: Development of a complex community intervention to increase physical activity in inactive adults aged 50 years and older – The M…
Despite well-known benefits of physical activity, in Ireland only 38 % of older adults are sufficiently active. Behavioural interventions are rarely developed systematically and, when reported, inadequate description often becomes a barrier for subsequent replication and scalability. In this article, we describe the development and characteristics of Move for Life, an intervention to reach and help inactive adults aged 50 years and older increase…

The reliability of an ‘off‐the‐shelf’ conceptual rainfall runoff model for use in climate impact assessment: Uncertainty quantification using Latin hypercube sampling
Much uncertainty is derived from the application of conceptual rainfall runoff models. In this paper, HYSIM, an ‘off‐the‐shelf’ conceptual rainfall runoff model, is applied to a suite of catchments throughout Ireland in preparation for use in climate impact assessment. Parameter uncertainty is assessed using the GLUE methodology. Given the lack of source code available for the model, parameter sampling is carried out using Latin hypercube samplin…

Creative Advertising and the von Restorff Effect
22 men and 38 women in an undergraduate psychology class ( M age 19.25 yr.) served in an experiment designed to assess whether a von Restorff effect for advertising slogans could be obtained in an incidental learning situation. The control group rated lists of nine ordinary slogans. The experimental groups rated equal-length lists with a distinctive slogan in the middle of the list. One experimental group rated a slogan considered distinctive bec…

The Changing Synoptic Origins of Irish Precipitation
Using Lamb circulation categories, daily precipitation receipt for 34 Irish sites are examined for the period since 1941.Marked gradients are apparent with particular trajectories, and the influence of ocean surface temperatures and topography is described.Changes in the frequency of occurrence of synoptic types, particularly westerly and cyclonic categories, are shown to have implications for the national distribution of precipitation and also f…
