Immigration, Incorporation, and Transnationalism
Immigration, Incorporation and Transition is an intriguing collection of articles and essays. It was developed to commemorate the twenty-fi fth anniversary of The Journal of American Ethnic History. Its purpose, like that of the Immigration and Ethnic History Society, is to integrate interdisciplinary perspectives and exciting new scholarship on important themes and issues related to immigration and ethnic history
Immigrants in the Far West: Historical Identities and Experiences
Urban Villages and Local Identities: Germans from Russia, Omaha Indians, and Vietnamese in Lincoln, Nebraska . By Kurt E. Kinbacher
This is a major piece of scholarship, daring in its use of four languages and ambitious in its incorporation of languages, cultures, and various aspects of diversity. Moreover, author Kurt E. Kinbacher has built into much of his study components of history, political science, and sociology, among other disciplines. The result is a study framed by multicultural concepts, which provide a uniformity that cuts across the entire work, despite the spec…
Immigrants in American History: Arrival, Adaptation, and Integration [4 volumes]
This encyclopedia is a unique collection of entries covering the arrival, adaptation, and integration of immigrants into American culture from the 1500s to 2010. Few topics inspire such debate among American citizens as the issue of immigration in the United States. Yet, it is the steady influx of foreigners into America over 400 years that has shaped the social character of the United States, and has favorably positioned this country for globali…
Race and Immigration in the United States: New Histories
Paul Spickard has compiled this exceptional collection of previously published articles concerning aspects of immigration issues from the colonial period to the present era. It may appear to focus on this broad period, with one chapter on the Muslim faith among antebellum Africans (and then among African Americans)—by Michael A. Gomez—and one on some Native American tribes, who, also early on, appear to have adopted a “red” identity (by Nancy Sho…

A Nation by Design: Immigration Policy in the Fashioning of America
Aristide R. Zolberg put the theme of this book most succinctly: It “is concerned exclusively with American immigration policy” (p. 11). Toward that end he observes that, as immigration increased, “‘regulation’ evolved imperceptibly from its earlier meaning of deterring undesirables from entering ... toward the notion of imposing limits on the overall flow, and thus turned into ‘restriction’” (p. 199). The 1920s saw a reversal of American policy—“…

Between Two Empires: Race, History, and Transnationalism in Japanese America
The incarceration of Japanese Americans has been discredited as a major blemish in American democratic tradition. Accompanying this view is the assumption that the ethnic group held unqualified allegiance to the United States. Between Two Empires probes the complexities of prewar Japanese America to show how Japanese in America held an in-between space between the United States and the empire of Japan, between American nationality and Japanese ra…

America in the Hand, Homeland in the Heart: Transnational and Translocal Immigrant Experiences in the American West
Centering immigration in western history, the author analyzes immigrant oral histories and provides an alternative conceptual model of immigrant experiences following a critical review of transnationalism, that of trans-localism. It posits, over time, that most immigrants have retained limited ties with their homelands, which nevertheless shaped their adaptation and cumulative contributions

Return of the Nativists: California Public Opinion and Immigration in the 1980s and 1990s
Anti-immigrant sentiments in California during the early 1990s raised questions about that state's association with nativism, the impact of recessions on public anxieties, and the validity of public opinion polls in measuring related attitudes and concerns. A series of California Field Polls administered statewide between 1982 and 1998 (most samples exceeding 1,000 persons) were used to examine Californians’ attitudes regarding legal and illegal …

The Ethnic Imperative: Examining the New White Ethnic Movement
The Validity of Occupational Data for Immigrants: An Empirical Investigation
The validity of the primary source of data on the occupations of immigrants to the United States (Immigration and Naturalization Service reports) has been severely criticized. In fact, the 'substantive meaningfulness' of results based on this data has been questioned. In this article we empirically investigate the nomological validity of these occupational data using a time series analysis. We find, at least on an aggregate level, that the result…
