Introduction
Are Children Interviewees Just Like Any Others
Based on a study combining qualitative and quantitative methods on children's relation to politics, this article discusses the specificities of childhood as a research object in the social sciences. It raises two key issues. The first relates to the aptitudes required to participate in research (and thus the reliability of children's responses) and the second relates to the potential imbalance in the research relationship. The article demonstrate…
Promoting prompt help-seeking for symptoms – assessing the impact of a gynaecological cancer leaflet on presentations to primary care
Listed on the ISRCTN registry with study ID ISRCTN61738692 on 23-8-2017 (retrospectively registered)
How Can We Explain the Gender Gap in Children's Political Knowledge
The gender gap is one of the main puzzles explored in research on political knowledge. Studies on children have shown that this phenomenon takes root in childhood. Girls score lower than boys on knowledge tests, despite cultural developments promoting greater gender equality. How can the gender gap in children's political knowledge be explained? This article examines the leading explanations for the gender gap found in the literature in light of …
Quantitative evaluation of an information leaflet to increase prompt help-seeking for gynaecological cancer symptoms
Increased symptom knowledge and lowered perceived barriers were related to increased prompt anticipated help-seeking. This occurred without an increase in anxiety. This intervention is effective in altering knowledge, beliefs and help-seeking intentions for gynaecological cancer symptoms, at least in the short-term, and should be trialled in primary care
Examining the effects of adjuvant chemotherapy on cognition and the impact of any cognitive impairment on quality of life in colorectal cancer patients
The result from this study will indicate whether a decline in cognitive functioning can be attributed to chemotherapy or to disease, surgical or some other confounding factor. Identification of risk factors for cognitive deficits may be used to inform targeted interventions, in order to improve QoL and help patients' cope
Answering Patient Questions about the Role Lifestyle Factors Play in Cancer Onset and Recurrence
This qualitative study examined how cancer specialists answer patient questions about what might have caused their cancer. Findings showed that while they were often candid about the role of smoking and drinking in cancer onset and that of diet in cancer recurrence, body weight and exercise were rarely mentioned. Any reluctance to discuss the role of lifestyle factors in cancer onset and recurrence arose from a desire to minimize patient distress…
Persistent Impact of Pubertal Timing on Trends in Smoking, Food Choice, Activity, and Stress in Adolescence
OBJECTIVES: a) To replicate the established association between early puberty and smoking; b) to see whether differences between early and late maturers narrowed with increasing age and differed by gender; and c) to determine whether other health behaviors (food choice, physical activity, sedentary behavior) and stress showed the same association with pubertal timing. METHODS: The Health and Behaviour in Teenagers Study (HABITS) followed a cohort…
Socioeconomic Status Differences in Coping With a Stressful Medical Procedure
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that socioeconomic disadvantage results in adverse emotional reactions to a novel, stressful, medical examination. METHODS: Sigmoidoscopy screening for colorectal cancer was identified as a potential stressor. A subset of participants (N = 3535) from the U.K. Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Trial completed pre- and postscreening questionnaires regarding psychologic well-being. All trial par…
Stress and dietary practices in adolescents.
Baseline data from the Health and Behavior in Teenagers Study (HABITS) were used to investigate associations between stress and dietary practices in a socioeconomically and ethnically diverse sample of 4,320 schoolchildren (mean age = 11.83 years). Male (n = 2,578) and female (n = 1,742) pupils completed questionnaire measures of stress and 4 aspects of dietary practice (fatty food intake, fruit and vegetable intake, snacking, and breakfast consu…
