Open Access•Siena Ansti, Siena Anstis et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2026•References: 6

States use mercenary spyware technology, such as NSO Group’s Pegasus, Paragon’s Graphite, and Cytrox’s Predator, to remotely and clandestinely infect the smartphones of members of civil society and gain complete access to the targeted device’s data. While such invasive and powerful technology has been the focus of some limited government action to curb proliferation, the global spyware industry continues to thrive. Purportedly developed as a mean…

Open Access•Siena Ansti, Siena Anstis et al.•ARTICLE•AJIL Unbound•2024

Nearly every aspect of our life is impacted by digital technologies manufactured and sold by companies. Example…

Open Access•René Mahieu, Hadi Asghari et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Information Policy•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 1

We investigate empirically whether the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) improved compliance with data protection rights of people who are not formally protected under GDPR. By measuring compliance with the right of access for European Union (EU) and Canadian residents, we find that this is indeed the case. We argue this is likely caused by the Brussels Effect, a mechanism whereby policy diffuses primarily through mark…

  • Detaining the Uncooperative Migrant

Siena Ansti, Siena Anstis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Social Policy•2020

A migrant held in a Canadian prison refuses to hand over a DNA sample to the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA). Another refuses to sign a statutory declaration of voluntary return to Somalia where his return is anything but voluntary. Others outright refuse at times to assist in any manner whatsoever with their own deportation. Canadian officials, judges, and adjudicators have treated all of these situations as instances of “non-cooperative”…
