A Winter Scientific Reconnaissance of the North Water
Since 1966 the Institute's Baffin Bay-North Water Project has been investigating the causes and effects of the large semi-permanent polynya in northern Baffin Bay and Smith Sound. Summaries of existing data have been made by Project personnel and detailed studies have been conducted during the summer season. Winter data in all disciplines relating to the North Water have been conspicuously lacking, so the Project proposed a ship-borne winter scie…
The Arctic Basin
Effects of the 1964 Alaskan Earthquake on Glaciers and Related Features
Describes an aerial photographic reconnaissance in Apr and Sept 1964 of the approx 30,000 sq mi area most seriously affected by the Mar 27 earthquake to assess the extent to which glacial features had been modified. Little change was apparent in glacial basins, lakes or tidewater calving, much less than after the 1899 and 1958 earthquakes of comparable violence. Some rock slides on to glaciers were impressive. The effects are related to the Tarr …
Glacier Studies of the McCall Glacier, Alaska
Describes in detail this glacier in the Romanzof Mts., Brooks Range, northern Alaska, studied during the McCall Glacier Project, 1957-58. The crescent-shaped body of ice, approx. 8 km long, 640 m wide and 1,450 m high, has three cirques and a well defined drainage basin. From the confluence of the cirques, the ice drops in eight broad steps to the terminus. The hummocky ice surface is mantled with dust, rock and boulders which melt into the ice, …
