Exploring IT business value creation in a Taobao Village EC ecosystem
Beyond 'Slumming It'—AI and the Real Lives of Global South Communities
Reimagining the language of engagement in a post-stakeholder world
Language matters in shaping perceptions and guiding behaviour. The term stakeholder is widely used, yet little attention is paid to the possibility that its use may inadvertently perpetuate colonial narratives and reinforce systemic inequities. In this article, we critically examine the limitations of the stakeholder concept and its ambiguity, normativity, and exclusionary implications. We emphasise the importance of using language that gives a v…

Warriors for the Working Day’. Henry V
This paper focuses on integrity and organizational leadership through the lens of Shakespeare’s Henry V, aiming to contribute to the debate about integrity in public administration. First, it sets out some of the major themes about integrity in public administration. Second, the paper begins to develop these themes, noting a common link between integrity and identity. This sets out a complex view of integrity which is holistic, inter- personal, a…
Integrity in Public Life
This article will evaluate whether a “duty of candour” on public employees including specifically health practitioners and police officers is an effective mechanism in terms for improving trust and openness. This is the context of the actions of the police in relation to the Hillsborough Stadium disaster in 1989 where 96 soccer fans died at the match due to ineffective policing. The formal identification of responsibility on the part of the polic…

The Emerging Governance of E-Infrastructure
The paper studies the transition to ICT-based support systems for scientific research. These systems currently attempt the transition from the project stage to the more permanent stage of an infrastructure. The transition leads to several challenges, including in the area of establishing adequate governance regimes, which not all projects master successfully. Studying a set of cases from Europe and America, we look at patterns in the size and sco…

E-Infrastructure Adoption in the Social Sciences and Humanities
This paper is a first attempt to describe and compare the adoption of e-Infrastructure across the UK, continental Europe, and the USA in the social sciences and humanities. A survey of early adopters identified three differences across these countries, each potentially affecting adoption: funding approaches, the technical configuration of projects, and research support. Our findings also suggest that the sustainable adoption of e-Infrastructure c…
Plant Macrofossils Associated with an Early Holocene Beaver Dam in Interior Alaska
Dynamic climate changes and expansion of new biomes characterize the late Pleistocene–early Holocene of eastern Beringia. Analysis of plant macrofossils from an early Holocene (ca. 9300 14C yrs BP) beaver dam in central Alaska provides insight into the local environment and vegetation. The plant macrofossil assemblage comprises remains of trees and shrubs, graminoids, and forbs, including Betula sp., Carex sp., Rubus sp., Eleocharis sp., Scirpus …
Case Studies of e-Infrastructure Adoption
This article reports results from a study of e-Infrastructure adoption in the social sciences and humanities (SSH). The authors find that bridging barriers between computer and domain scientists is of key importance. In particular, SSH communities have to be accepted as being distinct and not suited to a ‘‘one size fits all’’ strategy of e-Infrastructure diffusion. Sustainability was also a core issue, whereas barriers to resource sharing could m…

Engineering, Business & Professional Ethics
Engineering, as a profession and business, is at the sharp end of the ethical practice. Far from being a bolt on extra to the 'real work' of the engineer it is at the heart of how he or she relates to the many different stakeholders in the engineering project.Engineering, Business and Professional Ethics highlights the ethical dimension of engineering and shows how values and responsibility relate to everyday practice. Looking at the underlying v…
