What's Missing from Data Modernization? A Focus on Structural Racism
Public health data modernization efforts frequently overlook the far-reaching effects of structural racism across the data life cycle. Modernizing data requires creating data ecosystems grounded in six principles: dismantling structural racism and building community power explicitly; centering justice in all stages of data collection and analysis; ensuring communities can govern their data; driving positive population-level change; engaging nonpr…
Addressing Racism in Research Can Transform Public Health
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently issued a declaration reflecting what many already realized: racism is a threat to public health and a fundamental cause of health inequity in the United States. In 2020, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Urban Institute released a series of reports to highlight the lack of data on maternal outcomes disaggregated by race and ethnicity, the link of pandemic-related changes to maternit…
Michael Haneke's Cinema
To my knowledge, Catherine Wheatley's book is the first full-length study of Michael Haneke written in English. While good anglophone criticism does exist, it is in essay form. The pieces that spring to mind are the landmark essay by Brigitte Peucker on Haneke's ‘modernist melodramas’ and the astute articles by Maxmillian le Cain and Matthias Frey for the online journal Senses of Cinema.1 Wheatley's book goes much further by being doubly ambitiou…
The Death of Classical Cinema
From David Bordwell to Gilles Deleuze and beyond, the nature of classical cinema has long been debated by film theorists, and whatever differences there are, many constants crop up in the discourse – organic action-narrative, empathic stardom, readable mise-en-scene, match cuts, continuity editing, climactic plot resolution. Hollywood is usually taken to be the motor force in world cinema with its veneration of the First Five Minutes and its thre…

Framing the Rational in Fieldwork
Surfacing Times and Dive Rates for Narwhals ( Monodon monoceros ) and Belugas ( Delphinapterus leucas )
Time spent at and near the sea surface was measured for 25 narwhals, Monodon monoceros, and 39 belugas or white whales, Delphinapterus leucas, in West Greenland and Canada from 1993 through 1999, using satellite-linked data recorders. Narwhals spent less time at the surface than belugas did, and the surfacing time of belugas also varied between localities. No clear differences in surfacing time were associated with the time of day, but belugas te…
