A negative psychology? Approaching the psychological question of the good life from the perspective dialectical negativity
In this article we argue that the question of ‘the good life’ is an important psychological question that is an implicit part of psychological practice, but that is mainly approached explicitly from the perspective of positivity in psychological theory. We argue that this approach falls short in understanding and dealing with the otherness that constitutes human existence. Instead, we turn to Hegelian dialectics and negativity and suggest that Ki…
Negotiating boundaries: (A qualitative study of) mental health professionals’ demarcation of psychiatric diagnosis in everyday practice
The purpose of this article is to explore how mental health professionals make use of and negotiate the boundaries of psychiatric diagnosis in their everyday practice. The study is based on empirical material from four months of participant observation and interviews conducted in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric clinics in Denmark. In this article, we demonstrate how diagnoses are not only used to describe the condition of a patient, but…
The Janus Face of Individualization. Young People’s Lives between Soft and Hard Individualization
In this article, we argue that contemporary individualization is characterized by a Janus-faced duality of ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ individualization. Further, we disclose how the opposing demands of these two faces give rise to a series of conflicts, particularly evident in young people’s lives. While “hard individualization” demands optimization, goal orientation, and performance, “soft individualization” simultaneously encourages personal development…
Patients' Views on Psychiatry, Coercion, and Social Class
Based on 180 censored letters and two pamphlets written by psychiatric patients committed to Jydske Asyl (Asylum of Jutland) in Risskov, Denmark, between 1895 and 1920, the authors give an account of how the patients experienced their stay at the newly established mental hospital in Risskov. In the first part of the article, the authors outline central themes. The letters and pamphlets describe how a large part of the treatment at the mental hosp…
Heart-followers, hero, maiden: Life story positioning within a romantic couple
In this case study, we conducted a qualitative narrative analysis of 4 written life stories coming from a multiethnic, married Danish couple in their twenties: 2 personal life stories and 2 life stories written about each other, vicarious life stories. We suggest, first, that in these narrations each person positioned their partner's important life experiences in ways that served that narrator's identity, while maintaining some degree of fidelity…
The impact of population pressure on global fertiliser use intensity, 1970–2011: An analysis of policy-induced mediation
Kierkegaard and the modern search for self
In this article, I argue that Kierkegaard’s analysis of the self and the concept of despair introduces another approach to the self that is different from the one found in humanistic psychology. Rather than seeing the self as something organic, something universally and privately given to the individual to develop, Kierkegaard presented a dialectical and a relational understanding of the self, wherein the notion of “the other” is central. Central…
Pastoral techniques in the modern Danish educational system
In recent years, therapeutic techniques have played an increasingly significant role in Danish educational thinking. One way in which this therapeutic thinking discloses itself is in the ever‐growing use of educational‐therapeutic games as part of the educational practice. Inspired by Foucault, we argue that educational‐therapeutic games can be understood as a kind of confessional practice that introduces a pastoral power relationship between pup…

Small is Resilient—the Impact of Globalization on Denmark
The aim of this article is to investigate the impact of globalization on the Danish economy. We focus on four possible influences of globalization and European integration (as one of the expressions of globalization) which are widely discussed in the scientific discourse on this topic and appear to be relevant for the Danish case. These dimensions are the reduction of the repertoire and effectiveness of national economic policy, the pressure for …

The mixed economy, the neoliberal challenge, and the negotiated economy
Flexible Adjustment and Political Stability: The Terms of the Debate
Flexibility is a prominent catchword in recent economic and political debate. The need for increased flexibility in various areas of society is generally accepted. The article presents and criticizes the terms of this debate. As part of the general neoliberal trend flexibility is often perceived as a purely desirable quality. Less state, less unions and flexibilization by means of greater reliance upon markets are the policies that are proposed t…
Is Small Still Flexible? An Evaluation of Recent Trends in Danish Politics
How has Denmark been able to adjust its economic and industrial policies in an era of major changes in the international economy? The article gives a survey of the last 10 years, especially more recent years. Before 1986 wage policy and public‐expenditure policy were dominant. Since then they have been supplemented by a new structural policy to increase the level of technology, to improve education and research and to change the composition of Da…
The Negotiated Economy: Ideal and History
In the negotiated economy an essential part of the allocation of resources is by definition conducted through institutionalized negotiations between independent decisionmaking centres in state, organizations and corporations. Institutionalized creation of consensus via campaign institutions and forced compromise via negotiating procedures and decisions are central characteristics of the negotiated economy. The article includes evidence to the fac…
Financial Dependence and Organizational Autonomy: The Economy of Voluntary Sport in Denmark
In Denmark, as in most other Western European countries, sport has always been organized as a non-profit, voluntary sector, but the pattern in Denmark has changed significantly during the last decades. The traditional position between market and state is affected by changes in the financial structure and particularly by increasing public subsidies. As a result, the prescriptive autonomy of voluntary organized sport is threatened. Consequently, vo…
