Holocene Mg/Ca, alkenones, and light stable isotope measurements on the outer North Iceland shelf (MD99-2269)
To evaluate whether proxies that record surface, near-surface, and bottom water conditions from the North Iceland shelf have similar trends and periodicities, we examine Holocene century-scale paleoceanographic records from core MD99-2269. This core site lies close to the boundary between Atlantic and Arctic/Polar waters, and in an area frequently influenced by drift ice. The proxies are stable δ 13 C and δ 18 O values on planktonic and benthic f…
Subglacially precipitated carbonates record geochemical interactions and pollen preservation at the base of the Laurentide Ice Sheet on central Baffin Island, eastern Canadian Arctic
The mineralogy and isotopic compositions of subglacially precipitated carbonate crusts (SPCCs) provide information on conditions and processes beneath former glaciers and ice sheets. Here we describe SPCCs formed on gneissic bedrock at the bed of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) during the last glacial maximum on central Baffin Island. Geochemical data indicate that the Ca in the crusts was likely derived from the subglacial chemical weathering Ca-…
A comparison between multiproxy and historical data ( ad 1990–1840) of drift ice conditions on the East Greenland Shelf (~66°N)
The reduction in sea ice along the SE Greenland coast during the last century has severely impacted ice-rafting to this area. In order to reconstruct ice-rafting and oceanographic conditions in the area of Denmark Strait during the last ~150 years, we conducted a multiproxy study on three short (20 cm) sediment cores from outer Kangerdlugssuaq Trough (~300 m water depth). The proxy-based data obtained have been compared with historical and instru…
Cooling and freshening at 8.2 ka on the NW Iceland Shelf recorded in paired δ 18 O and Mg/Ca measurements of the benthic foraminifer Cibicides lobatulus
A shallow marine sediment core from NW Iceland provides evidence for a brief cooling and freshening at ~ 8200 cal yr BP, consistent with the hypothesis that the catastrophic outburst flood of the proglacial lakes Oijbway and Agassiz caused the 8.2 ka event. This is the first high-resolution record reconstructing near-surface temperatures and δ 18 O sw by paired measurements of Mg/Ca and δ 18 O calcite of a benthic foraminifer. We developed a new …
Formal definition and dating of the GSSP (Global Stratotype Section and Point) for the base of the Holocene using the Greenland NGRIP ice core, and selected auxiliary records
The Greenland ice core from NorthGRIP (NGRIP) contains a proxy climate record across the Pleistocene–Holocene boundary of unprecedented clarity and resolution. Analysis of an array of physical and chemical parameters within the ice enables the base of the Holocene, as reflected in the first signs of climatic warming at the end of the Younger Dryas/Greenland Stadial 1 cold phase, to be located with a high degree of precision. This climatic event i…
A robust, multisite Holocene history of drift ice off northern Iceland
An important indicator of Holocene climate change is provided by evidence for variations in the extent of drift ice. A proxy for drift ice in Iceland waters is provided by the presence of quartz. Quantitative x-ray diffraction analysis of the < 2 mm sediment fraction was undertaken on 16 cores from around Iceland. The quartz weight (wt.)% estimates from each core were integrated into 250-yr intervals between −0.05 and 11.7 cal. ka BP. Median quar…
Sea ice and marine climate variability for NW Iceland/Denmark Strait over the last 2000 cal. yr BP
MD99-2263 is a 46 cm box core collected from Djupall, a trough that cuts across the NW Iceland Shelf and ends above Denmark Strait. We provide a multiproxy record that documents changes in the regional marine climate over the last ~1700 yr. The depth/age model is based on seven calibrated radiocarbon dates on mollusk shells and on 210 Pb and 137 Cs. Sediment accumulation rates were variable (0.2—0.8 mm/yr) but increased dramatically ~AD 1500. Gra…
Geochemistry of Holocene cryptotephras from the North Iceland Shelf (MD99-2269)
Tephra-grain counting, morphology and geochemistry in the 150–1000 μm size fraction were used to identify 22 individual tephra horizons and one visible tephra layer (Saksunarvatn) from postglacial sediment of the north Iceland shelf. Core MD99-2269 (66°37.53‘N, 20°51.16‘W, water depth 365 m, length 2533 cm) from the Reykjafjardaráll basin is constrained at the base by the Vedde tephra (c. 12 000 cal. yr BP). Geochemical analyses and stratigraphic…
An exploratory method to detect tephras from quantitative XRD scans
Tephras, mainly from Iceland, are becoming increasingly important in interpreting leads and lags in the Holocene climate system across NW Europe. Here we demonstrate that Quantitative Phase Analysis of x-ray diffractograms of the 150 μm fraction and identify these same peaks in XRD scans two of these correlate geochemically and chronologically with Hekla 1104 and 3. At a distal site to the WNW of Iceland, on the East Greenland margin (core MD99-2…
Early to mid-Holocene Atlantic water influx and deglacial meltwater events, Beaufort Sea Slope, Arctic Ocean
Holocene high-resolution cores from the margin of the Arctic Ocean are rare. Core P189AR-P45 collected in 405-m water depth on the Beaufort Sea slope, west of the Mackenzie River delta (70°33.03′N and 141°52.08′W), is in close vertical proximity to the present-day upper limit of modified Atlantic water. The 5.11-m core spans the interval between ∼6800 and 10,400 14 C yr B.P. (with an 800-yr ocean reservoir correction). The sediment is primarily s…
Holocene thermal maximum in the western Arctic (0–180°W)
A high-resolution Holocene sediment record from Húnaflóaáll, N Iceland margin
MD99-2269 is a 25 m long core from Hunaflóadll, a deep trough which runs northward towards the shelf break from the narrow neck of land which joins the Northwest Peninsula of Iceland with the ‘mainland’. The core was recovered from the thickest part of an elongate shelf sediment body, underlain by glacial diamictons with ages 26 ka BP. 3.5 kHz profiles indicate the presence of a reflector, RI, which can be traced over long distances. Twelve AMS r…
A mid-Holocene shift in Arctic sea-ice variability on the East Greenland Shelf
Records of iceberg-rafting and palaeohydrography from two East Greenland shelf cores (JM96-1206/1-GC and JM96-1207/1-GC) are reported. Benthic foraminifera, stable isotopes and IRD fluxes indicate a shift toward colder, lower-salinity ‘polar’ conditions c. 5 cal. ka. A new proxy of iceberg-rafting on the East Greenland Shelf is the flux of calcium carbonate (TIC) thought to be derived from glacial erosion of Cretaceous calcareous mudstones. A cha…
Multicentury-Scale Records of Carbonate (Hydrographic?) Variability on the Northern Iceland Margin over the Last 5000 Years
The waters off northern Iceland are subjected to extreme hydrographic variability on annual to decadal timescales. In years when cold low-salinity water moves coastward and sea ice is prevalent (i.e., the late 1960s), marine productivity of surface waters is low because the water column is well stratified. In the opposite oceanographic mode, warm, salty Atlantic Water dominates the shelf and vertical mixing results in high productivity. We track …
Late-Holocene terrestrial glacial history of Miki and I.C. Jacobsen Fjords, East Greenland
We present a late-Holocene glacial and environmental history of three valleys within Miki and I.C. Jacobsen Fjords, East Greenland (68°N). The fjords have no direct connection with the main ice sheet and are presently glacierized by a series of local ice caps and glaciers. Little sediment has been deposited within the study area, but bedrock is distinctly glacially striated, which suggests that extensive valley glaciers reached the present coastl…
Problems and Possible Solutions Concerning Radiocarbon Dating of Surface Marine Sediments, Ross Sea, Antarctica
Radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometric (AMS) dates on the acid-insoluble fraction from 38 core tops from the western Ross Sea, Antarctica, are used to address these questions: (1) What are the apparent ages of sediments at or close to the present sediment/water interface? (2) Is there a statistically significant pattern to the spatial distribution of core top ages? and (3) Is there a “correction factor” that can be applied to these age determ…
Late Pleistocene-Holocene marine conditions in the Ross Sea, Antarctica
Statistical analyses of diatom assemblages from radiocarbon-dated sediment cores were used to reconstruct changing palaeoceanographic conditions in the western and west-central Ross Sea, Antarctica, from. c.12 14 C kyr BP to the present. Data from three Kasten cores support a north-to-south time-transgressive glacial/interglacial transition. Assemblages at the base of each core suggest that glacial processes affecting frustule preservation were s…
Late Quaternary (Stage 2 and 3) Meltwater and Heinrich Events, Northwest Labrador Sea
Two major meltwater events are documented in cores from the NW Labrador Sea. One occurred ca. 20,000 14 C yr B.P. in association with deposition of a major detrital carbonate unit. Both prior to and after this event, δ 18 O values of near-surface planktonic foraminifera were 4.5%, indicating fully enriched glacial values. A younger event (ca. 14,000 14 C yr B.P.) is characterized by a dramatic change in δ 18 O from 4.5 to 2.0% and coincided with …
Evidence for massive discharges of icebergs into the North Atlantic ocean during the last glacial period
Baffin Island Fjord Macrobenthos
Cluster analysis of the benthos from ten Baffin Island fjords defines six faunal associations. The macrotidal Sunneshine Fiord has a shallow kelp-related Isopod Association. Cambridge Fiord supports a shallow Onuphid Association controlled by gravel from dropstones. A widespread Portlandia Association typified the shallow zones of more recently glaciated fjords where sedimentation rates are high. An Ophiuroid-Anemone Association was defined from …

Canada
Editor's note : The first President's Symposium was held during the cag annual meeting at the University of Winnipeg in 1983. The idea was to air some broad and invigorating topic to which invited specialists from across the country could contribute under presidential direction. The inaugural topic selected by the president, Professor D.C. Ford, was ‘Canada: how many glaciations?’ The specialist contributors certainly learned a great deal, and th…
Multiple Deglaciations of the Hudson Bay Lowlands, Canada, Since Deposition of the Missinaibi (Last-Integlacial?) Formation
The stratigraphic record in the James and Hudson Bay Lowlands indicates that the sequence of glacial events at the geographical center of the 12.6 × 10 6 km 2 Laurentide Ice Sheet may have been more complex than hitherto imagined. Isoleucine epimerization ratios of in situ and transported shells recovered from till and associated marine and fluvial sediments cluster into at least 4 discrete groups. Two alternative explanations of the data are off…
Re-evaluation of Pollen-Climate Transfer Functions in Keewatin, Northern Canada
Multivariate statistical analyses allow specification of pollen-climate transfer functions useful in studies of paleoclimate. Two previously published models, when applied to two documented sites in Canada's District of Keewatin, produce inconsistent reconstructions of mean July temperatures for the mid- to late-Holocene (approximately the past 5,000 years). The discrepancy between the results arises from differences in the construction of the fu…

Vallons De Gelivation” in Central Labrador‐ungava
A Study of Late-Quaternary Plant-Bearing Beds in North-Central Baffin Island, Canada
Plant-bearing beds, exposed by downcutting of the Isortoq River at the northern end of the Barnes Icecap, have been folded, apparently by east-west moving overriding ice, truncated and overlain by horizontal alluvial sediments. Radiocarbon dates for plant material from the Isortoq River (folded unit), Flitaway Lake, and Lewis Glacier localities are >30,000 to >40,000 yr BP, from the horizontal beds, 14,000 ± 400 yr BP. The vegetation was probably…
Importance of the Radiocarbon Standard Deviation in Determining Relative Sea Levels and Glacial Chronology from East Baffin Island
Deals with the problem of error in estimating relative sea levels and glacial chronology in a small area where radiocarbon dates provide some chronological order, but where the precision of radiometric technique does not allow a clear-cut chronology to be developed on that basis alone. An equation is presented to predict postglacial uplift which is defined as the algebraic sum of the equation of the marine limit and the appropriate eustatic sea l…
University of Colorado 1969 Summer Field Season in East Baffin Island
For the second year running, the University of Colorado's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) and associated Departments (Biology, Geology, Geography and Anthropology) carried out a multidisciplinary research project in the region of Broughton Island, east Baffin Island (c 67°30'N). During the 1968 summer, the late glacial chronology and uplift at the head of Quajon and Narpaing fiords had been studied. An Austrian storage gauge was…
Quaternary History of Northern Cumberland Peninsula, Baffin Island, N.W.T.
Corries in Okoa Bay contain glaciers, ice patches or are empty. Each of 165 corries is described by 17 variables that describe shape, location and geometry and also have some relationship to the glaciological conditions in each basin. Analyses of these data in terms of “explaining” the factors controlling glacierization (using information and graph-theoretic methods and multiple stepwise discriminant analysis) all emphasize the importance of elev…
A Discussion of Atmospheric Circulation During the Last Ice Age
Comparison of Elevations of Archaeological Sites and Calculated Sea Levels in Arctic Canada
Based on a study of postglacial uplift in the Canadian Arctic, it has been proposed that relative emergence can be estimated if the age and elevation of late-glacial marine limits are known. This suggestion is used to construct 5 maps showing the amounts of relative sea level emergence since 4000, 3200, 2400, 1600 and 800 BP. The archaeological sequence of coastal arctic Canada has been artificially divided into 5 corresponding 800-year periods. …

Past and Present Glaciological Responses to Climate in Eastern Baffin Island
Much of Baffin Island is close to the modern glaciation limit and climatic changes within the last decade are already being reflected in snow cover extent. Statistical analysis of glacierized and ice-free corries indicates that changes in direct solar radiation due to astronomical factors are inadequate to account for glacierization of those at present ice-free. These and other sources of evidence demonstrate the need for augmented winter snowfal…

Research was continued by University of Colorado faculty and graduate students in the area of Cumberland Peninsula. Baffin Island, Northwest Territories. The work was divided into four main phases: 1) studies on the glacial chronology of the Penny Ice Cap and local mountain ice caps; 2) the mass balance of the Boas Glacier; 3) air-sea interactions using ground stations, instrumented aircraft and satellite data; and 4) evaluation of climatic trend…

SEA ICE. Studies of surface energy budgets on the fast ice at Broughton Island 67°35' N, 63°50' W) were undertaken from late May to August 1972. The program included micrometeorological measurements on the fast ice and ice thickness surveys. Climatological observations including radiation studies begun in June 1971 by The Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at a site in Broughton village were continued. The summer of 1972 was one of unusually…
University of Colorado 1973 Field Season on Baffin Island
A total of 10 persons, including members of faculty, graduate students and assistants were involved in the 1973 field season of the University of Colorado in both northern and southern Cumberland Peninsula. The major objectives of the research undertaken were: (a) to study the Quaternary geology and geomorphic processes operating within the Baffin Island National Park and on the Peninsula in general; and (b) to study the energy balance and break-…
Holocene Environmental Changes in the Alpine Zone, Northern San Juan Mountains, Colorado
Cores from five high alpine basins in the northern San Juan Mountains show several fluctuations in lithology. Typically, peats are interbedded with coarser clastic sediments or else woody peats alternate with fibrous peat. Twenty 14 C dates provide radiometric control. Sediment rates averaged about 2.5 cm/100 yr but varied at the different sites between 1.19 and 50 cm/100 yr. Rates were lower during the middle of the Holocene. Basal radiocarbon d…
University of Colorado 1974 Field Season in Eastern Baffin Island
The summer of 1974 saw one of the largest research parties the University of Colorado has been able to mount operating along the eastern coast of Baffin Island. The early and widespread break-up of sea ice greatly assisted in the completion of the field programme in which a total of sixteen persons were involved. In addition to members of the University staff, the following individuals from other institutions also participated. In the programme: …
Growth rate of the Laurentide Ice Sheet and sea Level Lowering (with Emphasis on the 115,000 BP Sea Level Low)
A physically plausible three-dimensional numerical ice flow model is used to examine the rate at which the Laurentide Ice Sheet could spread and thicken using as input likely values for the rate of fall of snowline and the amount of net mass balance over the growing ice sheet. This provides then both a test of the hypothesis of “instantaneous glacierization” and of the suggested rapid fall of world sea level to between −20 and −70 m below present…
University of Colorado 1975 Field Season on Baffin Island
Eight individual research programmes were carried out by graduate students and one faculty member of the University's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) during the 1975 field season. They were concentrated around the settlements of Broughton Island and Pangnirtung as well as the DEW line station at Cape Dyer. Field operations were facilitated by an early break-up, which permitted sea travel by canoe. ... Two investigations were car…
University of Colorado 1976 Field Season in Eastern Baffin Island
A large programme was carried out during the summer of 1976 by faculty members and graduate students from the University of Colorado's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) and Department of Geological Sciences. The research included studies of various aspects of Quaternary geology and chronology, investigations of micropalaeontological fauna from raised marine sediments, studies of weathering and of the role and significance of tors …
Rapid Ice-Sheet Growth and Initiation of the Last Glaciation
Calculations based on temperature-corrected oxygen-isotope ratios from deep-sea cores yield a glacioeustatic sea-level fall in excess of 50 m during the first 10,000 yr of the last glaciation, and generally support the local regression of about 70 m inferred from tectonically rising New Guinea beaches. We propose that this rapid glacial buildup depended on high-latitude cooling, and large increases of high-latitude regional winter precipitation i…
Report on the Distribution of Dwarf Birches and Present Pollen Rain, Baffin Island, N.W.T., Canada
A distribution map for the dwarf birches is presented for the region from Frobisher Bay northward to Cumberland Peninsula. These shrubs are restricted to favourable habitats which, at the northern limit of the species (67 deg. 40 sec. N), are found on south-facing slopes above the immediate local cooling influence of the sea. Pollen studies within the zone of scattered dwarf birch indicate that pollen dispersal from these low, prostrate shrubs is…
Eigenvector Analysis of Reconstructed Holocene July Temperature Departures over Northern Canada
July temperatures for the past 6000 yr at 11 sites in northern Canada have been predicted by transfer-function equations. Normalized departures from the mean of each time series at 250-yr intervals are analyzed by principal component (eigenvector) analysis. An initial analysis included 9 sites and the first three principal components accounted for 85.7% of the variance. Maps of the loadings on the principal components show broad spatial coherence…
