Combined Approach to Locate Medieval Fortified Manor Houses in Central Moravia (the Czech Republic)
A systematic prospection of medieval fortified manor houses (FMHs) in Central Moravia (Czech Republic) was conducted with the aim of mapping their distribution and facilitating both further scholarly research and more effective heritage protection by responsible institutions. Given the inherent limitations of individual investigative techniques, a combined methodological framework drawing on historical research, socio‐historical approaches and na…
Vybavení interiérů domácností na panství Sovinec ve světle pozůstalostních inventářů ze 17. a 18. století
The study deals with the furnishing of households in Sovinec region on the basis of books of inheritance inventories and testaments written in German from the 17th and 18th centuries in comparisn with other areas and source types. The main emphasis is placed on the equipment of the interiors, namely the furniture and decoration. The author examines what kind of equipment appears in the inventories, how often they appear, or what equipment can be …
Venkovští mistři a založení nového cechu krejčích a ševců ve Šlapanicích roku 1834
This study deals with the situation of rural masters in Moravia based on the example of a tailor and cobbler guild founded in lapanice in 1834. The author analyses different means of dependency of the rural masters on their home guild, the problems that were linked to this dependency, and the reasons for founding a new guild. This study also shows guild life in Moravia during the 19th century and all that was connected to it
Development of land use and main land use change processes in the period 1836–2006
Two different sets of maps, on a scale of 1:110, 000, show the development of land use and main land use change processes in a 500 km2 study area that occurred over the last 170 years. Analytical maps of land use were derived from old topographical military maps, as well as from base maps, using five time periods by the process of on-screen digitization. These analytical maps formed a basis for synthetic maps of land use change processes, number …
Diversity and abundance of soil algae in the polar desert, Sverdrup Pass, central Ellesmere Island
Cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae were investigated during three seasons in 18 plots established across Sverdrup Pass valley of central Ellesmere Island, 79°N, Canada. The sites differed in altitude, substratum, and other characteristics. A high species diversity totalled 136 taxa. Cyanobacteria accounted for 52 and eukaryotic algae 84 species. In both groups, numerous species did not correspond to any taxa described. However, high diversity did…

Post-Chernobyl 134Cs and 137Cs Levels at Some Localities in Northern Canada
Samples of lichen, moss and caribou meat from the high and central arctic regions of Canada were measured for 137Cs due to the Chernobyl accident of April 1986. They were compared to lichen samples from the boreal area of Wood Buffalo National Park, Alberta, and to moss samples from the temperate Niagara Escarpment of southern Ontario. Lichens from Ellesmere Island and mosses from the Niagara Escarpment had no detectable Chernobyl 137Cs. Lichens …
Survey of Vegetated Areas and Muskox Populations in East-Central Ellesmere Island
The results of 1981-84 summer helicopter surveys and ground reconnaissance of east-central Ellesmere Island are presented. This was the first systematic ecological survey to be conducted in this region of the Canadian High Arctic. Central Ellesmere Island is dominated by two large ice fields separated by the deglaciated Sverdrup Pass (79 degrees N). Muskox migrate freely through the 70 km long corridor between the Fosheim Peninsula and some lowla…
Entombed Plant Communities Released by a Retreating Glacier at Central Ellesmere Island, Canada
The release of a dead but well-preserved high arctic plant community, entombed for about 400 radiocarbon years (WAT-778 and 789) under glacial ice at Twin Glacier, central Ellesmere Island (78°53'N, 75°55'W) is reported. Remarkably intact plants have been emerging from under the ablating front of this polar glacier which has been retreating for several decades at an average rate of 4.1 m/y over the last 22 years. The vegetation can be readily rec…
Permafrost Development in the Intertidal Zone at Churchill, Manitoba
Boreholes drilled in the Beech Bay area during July to November 1929 indicated that a sill of permafrost had extended below the high-water line, tapering in depth towards low water. The boreholes revealed thick layers of fine sediments on top of deep underlain bedrock. Recent borings determined the upper limits of permafrost in 1981. Examination of the data shows that there has been a permafrost expansion into the emerging tidal zone. These obser…

Origin and Significance of Wet Spots on Scraped Surfaces in the High Arctic
In the western Queen Elizabeth Islands, Northwest Territories, where most of the petroleum exploration in the High Arctic is being conducted, much of the low lying land is covered with sorted and non-sorted circles and polygons 0.5-2.0 m in diameter. ... Much of the oil-camp construction takes place on the coastal low-lands on polygonal surfaces composed of sandy to silty loams. When these surfaces are scraped and reworked for camp areas and air …
