  • Lessons from the Arctic—The Need for Environmental Observations

    Open Access•Larry D Hinzman, John E Walsh•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2025

  • Sea ice and socio-economic impacts from extreme events in Nome, Alaska

    Open Access•Nathan P Kettle, Zav Grabinski et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2025•References: 54

Changing sea-ice conditions have significant societal impacts and implications across Alaska and the Arctic. This research examined the relationship between sea ice and extreme weather events with socio-economic impacts in Nome, Alaska (1990–2020), a community that has experienced notable changes in sea ice and impacts from extreme weather events. The research is based on the analysis of sea-ice concentrations from passive microwave data, socio-e…

  • Climate drivers of Arctic tundra variability and change using an indicators framework

    Open Access•Uma S Bhatt, Donald A Walker et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

This study applies an indicators framework to investigate climate drivers of tundra vegetation trends and variability over the 1982–2019 period. Previously known indicators relevant for tundra productivity (summer warmth index (SWI), coastal spring sea-ice (SI) area, coastal summer open-water (OW)) and three additional indicators (continentality, summer precipitation, and the Arctic Dipole (AD): second mode of sea level pressure variability) are …

  • Key indicators of Arctic climate change

Open Access•Jason E Box, William Colgan et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Key observational indicators of climate change in the Arctic, most spanning a 47 year period demonstrate fundamental changes among nine key elements of the Arctic system. We find that, coherent with increasing air temperature, there is an intensification of the hydrological cycle, evident from increases in humidity, precipitation, river discharge, glacier equilibrium line altitude and land ice wastage. Downward trends continue in sea ice thicknes…

  • Indicators and trends of polar cold airmass

Open Access•Yuki Kanno, John E Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

Trends and variations in the amount of cold airmass in the Arctic and the Northern Hemisphere are evaluated for the 60 year period, 1959–2018. The two indicators are (1) polar cold air mass (PCAM), which is the amount of air below a potential temperature threshold, and (2) negative heat content (NHC), which includes a weighting by coldness. Because the metrics of coldness are based on multiple layers in the atmosphere, they provide a more compreh…

  • Warming in the Nordic Seas, North Atlantic storms and thinning Arctic sea ice

    Open Access•V A Alexeev, John E Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

Arctic sea ice over the last few decades has experienced a significant decline in coverage both in summer and winter. The currently warming Atlantic Water layer has a pronounced impact on sea ice in the Nordic Seas (including the Barents Sea). More open water combined with the prevailing atmospheric pattern of airflow from the southeast, and persistent North Atlantic storms such as the recent extremely strong Storm Frank in December 2015, lead to…

  • A database for depicting Arctic sea ice variations back to 1850

    Open Access•John E Walsh, F Fetterer et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•2017•Cited by: 10•References: 31

Arctic sea ice data from a variety of historical sources have been synthesized into a database extending back to 1850 with monthly time‐resolution. The synthesis procedure includes interpolation to a uniform grid and an analog‐based estimation of ice concentrations in areas of no data. The consolidated database shows that there is no precedent as far back as 1850 for the 21st century's minimum ice extent of sea ice on the pan‐Arctic scale. A regi…

  • Arctic sea ice

    Tracy S Rogers, John E Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Geography•2015

This manuscript presents an evaluation of global climate models to guide future projections of Arctic sea ice extent (SIE). Thirty-five model simulations from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, Phase 5 were examined to select model subsets using comparison to observational data (1979–2013). The study extends previous work by highlighting the seasonality of sea ice trends, utilizing a multi-step selection process to demonstrate how the timing …

  • An observation-based assessment of the influences of air temperature and snow depth on soil temperature in Russia

Open Access•Hotaek Park, Artem B Sherstiukov et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2014

This study assessed trends in the variability of soil temperature (T _SOIL ) using spatially averaged observation records from Russian meteorological land stations. The contributions of surface air temperature (SAT) and snow depth (SND) to T _SOIL variation were quantitatively evaluated. Composite time series of these data revealed positive trends during the period of 1921–2011, with accelerated increases since the 1970s. The T _SOIL warming rate…

  • Effects of Climate Change on the Seasonality of Weather for Tourism in Alaska

Open Access•Gongmei Yu, Zvi Schwartz et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2009

This study presents a method to identify and categorize seasonal patterns of weather conducive to specific tourism activities, using a tourism climate index based on hourly weather data. We examined changes in seasonal weather patterns in recent decades (1942–2005) at two Alaska destinations, King Salmon and Anchorage. The results indicate that climate warming has had both positive and negative effects on opportunities for tourism. The overall we…

  • Historical and Projected Distributions of Daily Temperature and Pressure in the Arctic

    Open Access•Michael S Timlin, John E Walsh•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2009

Changes in extreme temperatures and pressures in the Arctic have received little attention in the context of climate change. Here we examine the distributions and extremes of surface air temperature and pressure in the Arctic for the late 20th century, using Alaskan weather station data, an atmospheric reanalysis, and general circulation models (GCMs). There is good agreement among these sources for the late 20th century, with broader distributio…

  • This Brief Tragedy

    Vivian R Pollak, John E Walsh•ARTICLE•American Literature•1993

Dear Cousins, Called back, Emily. Why did Emily Dickinson write this cryptic note to her spinster cousins just before she died? In this arresting, even startling reevaluation of Dickinson's final years, Walsh presents the real story behind the adulterous affair that may have driven Emily Dickinson to suicide.
