  • Evidence for unexpected net permafrost aggradation driven by local hydrology and climatic triggers

Open Access•Anastasia E Sniderhan, Christopher Spence et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Rapid rates of high latitude warming over the past century have led to widespread research on permafrost thaw and its consequences. Studies from lowland plains environments in the discontinuous permafrost zone have highlighted extensive areal loss of permafrost, largely through observations of the collapse of forested permafrost plateaus into wetland features. These low-relief environments tend to have poor drainage, which initiates runaway thaw …

  • Diel, seasonal, and inter-annual variation in carbon dioxide effluxes from lakes and reservoirs

    Open Access•Małgorzata Gołub, Nikaan Koupaei‐Abyazani et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Accounting for temporal changes in carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) effluxes from freshwaters remains a challenge for global and regional carbon budgets. Here, we synthesize 171 site-months of flux measurements of CO 2 based on the eddy covariance method from 13 lakes and reservoirs in the Northern Hemisphere, and quantify dynamics at multiple temporal scales. We found pronounced sub-annual variability in CO 2 flux at all sites. By accounting for diel vari…

  • Late-Holocene diatom community response to climate driven chemical changes in a small, subarctic lake, Northwest Territories, Canada

    Open Access•Paul B Hamilton, Scott J Hutchinson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•References: 2

The paleolimnological record of diatoms and climate, spanning the last 2800 years, was investigated in a small subarctic lake (Pocket Lake) that from AD 1948 to 2004 was contaminated by gold smelting waste. An age-depth model was constructed using a combination of 210 Pb, 14 C, and tephra to determine a 2800 year history of lake ontogeny (natural aging), biological diversity, and regional climate variability. Diatoms form six strong paleoecologic…

  • A Paradigm Shift in Hydrology

    Open Access•Christopher Spence•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 56

A paradigm shift is occurring in the science surrounding runoff generation processes. Results of recent field investigations in landscapes and during periods previously unobservable are shaping new ideas on how runoff is generated and transferred from the hillslope to the catchment outlet. The previous paradigm saw runoff generation and contributing area variability as a continuum. The new paradigm is based not on continual storage satisfaction a…

  • The Effect of Storage on Runoff from a Headwater Subarctic Shield Basin

    Open Access•Christopher Spence•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2000

Canadian Shield runoff production processes have been investigated, but research is needed beyond the hillslope scale to determine the influences on the volume and timing of runoff from headwater basins to higher-order streams. Such research will permit an understanding of the magnitude of climate change impacts at the watershed scale, where changes in the hydrologic regime are felt most by water resource users. To this end, water budget terms we…
