  • Gray Rainbows

    Open Access•Robert Burton, Robert P Burton•ARTICLE•Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare…•2024

“You fooled me. I never dreamt,” George said to the pasty gray face in the mirror. As a child, he had worked out complicated schemes of how the world must be constructed. This led to that, and that led to this. When this and that no longer fit together, he began to squint, and limit his view to the essential. At any moment, the sky might break open and rain body parts and end times. He never imagined that it would be colors that would give way

  • Robert Mossman, Endurance and the Weddell Sea ice

    Open Access•Robert Burton, John King et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Before Shackleton arrived at South Georgia aboard Endurance on 5 November 1914 he was aware that the vessel might meet bad pack-ice in the Weddell Sea. This had been forecast on the basis of climate analysis by Robert Mossman, the meteorologist on the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902–1904), who was currently working at the Argentine Meteorological Office. Mossman was interested in teleconnections linking meteorological and oceanic con…

  • The Weddell seals of Larsen Harbour, South Georgia: A unique but apparently declining colony

    Open Access•Robert Burton•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2015•References: 9

The small population of Weddell seals at Larsen Harbour, South Georgia, is isolated from the rest of the species and is unique because nearly all pups are born on land rather than on sea-ice. Observations of seals in Larsen Harbour during the breeding season are summarised. These have been infrequent until cruise ships started to visit. With often only a single observation in a year, accurate estimates of pup production are impossible but it appe…

Bernard Stonehouse (Fig. 1) died on 12 November 2014 at the age of 88. Best known for his pioneering studies of penguins, Stonehouse's proud claim was that he had been pecked by all the world's 17 species except one (the Galapagos penguin Spheniscus mendiculus ). He was one of the few people to have spent three consecutive years in the Antarctic and was latterly involved with the Antarctic tourist industry both as a lecturer aboard cruise ships a…

  • Developing methodologies for evaluating community-wide health promotion

    Open Access•Rob Sanson-Fisher, Robert Sanson-Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•1996

There has been growing recognition that health promotion programs which target whole communities are more likely to be effective in changing health behaviour. However, studies evaluating the impact of community-wide health promotion programs rarely use adequate methodology. Randomised control trials where multiple whole communities are randomly assigned to control and intervention groups are optimum if evaluators hope to validly attribute changes…
