Forty-seven Years of Research on the Devon Island Ice Cap, Arctic Canada
The Devon Island ice cap has been the subject of scientific study for almost half a century, beginning with the first mass balance measurements in 1961. Research on the ice cap was the first to investigate (1) the role of meltwater in seasonal ice-velocity variations on a polythermal Arctic ice cap, (2) the use of air temperature rather than net radiation as a proxy for the energy driving surface melt, and (3) the influence of the changing freque…
The Mt Logan Holocene—late Wisconsinan isotope record
The ice core recovered from Prospector Russell Col on Mt Logan (5.4 km a.s.l.), in the Yukon spans over 20 000 years. This unique record offers a Pacific view of the stable isotope and chemical record from the Lateglacial to the present. The timescale is based on seasonal counted years, the largest known volcanic acid signatures and the major shift in stable isotopes and chemistry at the end of the Younger Dryas. There are large and sustained cha…
A Holocene Record of Atmospheric Dust Deposition on the Penny Ice Cap, Baffin Island, Canada
An >11,550-yr-long record of atmospheric dust deposition was developed from an ice core (P95) drilled through the Penny ice cap, Baffin Island. The P95 record documents environmental changes that affected the production and transport of dust in the eastern Canadian Arctic during the late Pleistocene and Holocene. Dust deposition on the Penny ice cap was greatest in late-glacial time when the climate was dry and windy and comparatively low in the …
A Holocene Ice-Core Pollen Record from Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada
A Holocene record of pollen deposition was obtained from an ice core drilled through the Agassiz Ice Cap. The pollen records long-range atmospheric transport to the ice cap. Pollen concentrations were highest in the early Holocene (∼15 grains/L), decreased in the mid-Holocene (∼6 grains/L), and increased in the late Holocene (∼9 grains/L). In the early Holocene, the higher concentration of tree pollen at a time when large parts of Canada were sti…
The Mass Balance of Circum-Arctic Glaciers and Recent Climate Change
The sum of winter accumulation and summer losses of mass from glaciers and ice sheets (net surface mass balance) varies with changing climate. In the Arctic, glaciers and ice caps, excluding the Greenland Ice Sheet, cover about 275,000 km 2 of both the widely glacierized archipelagos of the Canadian, Norwegian, and Russian High Arctic and the area north of about 60°N in Alaska, Iceland, and Scandinavia. Since the 1940s, surface mass balance time-…
Holocene climatic records from Agassiz Ice Cap, Ellesmere Island, NWT, Canada
Four ice cores from the top of the Agassiz Ice Cap and down a flow line have been variously analysed for 8 ( 18 O), ECM (solid conductivity) and ice-melt layer stratigraphy. Stratigraphic correlation of volcanic horizons is used to date the last 8000 years of the cores. The timescales at the Wisconsin/ Holocene transition are pinned at the new GRIP ice-core date. Both 8 and summer-melt records from cores A84 and A87 imply summer temperatures have…
Signal and noise in four ice-core records from the Agassiz Ice Cap, Ellesmere Island, Canada
Four ice cores and two deep pit/auger sequences from the top of the Agassiz Ice Cap have been variously analysed for δ(O 18 ), ECM (solid conductivity) and ice melt-layer stratigraphy. The high- resolution data are presented on time scales covering about the last 1000 years. The 8 time series are compared and the noise examined in terms of snow-drifting and wind-scouring of winter snow from the higher exposed parts of flow lines. The highly scour…
