    T V Buttrey, Adon Gordus et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•1972•Cited by: 1

T HE MEXICAN REVOLUTION caused enormous economic dislocation, of which one aspect was the collapse of the money system. The Mexico City mint, which had suspended gold coinage in 191o, ceased to strike the pesos fuertes in March, 1914, and the subsidiary silver in September. Federal gold and silver coin presently disappeared from circulation. Throughout the country masses of paper money were issued, of irregular circulation and precarious value; i…

  • Obsidian Samples from Archaeological Sites in Northwestern Alaska: A Preliminary Report

    Open Access•James B Griffin, Gary A Wright et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1969

Reports the Na and Mn contents and Na/Mn ratios, determined by neutron activation analyses of 103 obsidian samples from the Onion Portage and nine related archeological sites. The occurrence and stratigraphic distribution are noted of four groups of obsidian distinguished by Mn content and Na/Mn ratio. Group B, the largest, appears in a complex with an age of 4000-3900 BC and in another of 1000-1700 AD, group A in complexes dating at 2600-2200 an…

  • Identification of the Sources of Hopewellian Obsidian in the Middle West

    Open Access•James B Griffin, Adon A Gordus et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1969•Cited by: 31•References: 3

One hundred and twenty years ago, the first obsidian implements were reported from Hopewellian mounds by Squier and Davis (1848). Since that time, a number of regions have been suggested as the source area: Alaska, the Pacific Coast, Yellowstone National Park, New Mexico, and central Mexico. Neutron activation analysis of the elemental composition of Hopewellian obsidian indicates two separate element groups. One of these, the 150 Group, has its …

  • Neutron Activationianalysis of Obsidian: An Example of its Relevance to Northwestern Plains Archaeology

    George C Frison, Gary A Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1968•Cited by: 9

By a process of neutron activation, obsidian samples from an archaeological site may be traced to their quarry sources. The potential of this type of information remains largely unexplored and this paper is one small example of its application to Northwestern Plains Archaeology

  • Studies On the Fineness of Silver Coins

    Adon A Gordus, Jere L Bacharach•ARTICLE•Journal of the Economic and…•1968•Cited by: 1

rely solely on written evidence, neglecting the most abundant historical artifacts available-coins. When turning to numismatic evidence, the historian generally concerns himself only with the enscribed dates and names of rulers. However, the quantity of coins available demands that the historian, and particularly the economic historian, study the coins for what they are-a money. In many cases coins are the most important, if not the only source o…
