  • Development and feasibility testing of the Pediatric Emergency Discharge Interaction Coding Scheme

    Open Access•Janet Curran, Janet A Curran et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2017

BACKGROUND: Discharge communication is an important aspect of high-quality emergency care. This study addresses the gap in knowledge on how to describe discharge communication in a paediatric emergency department (ED). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this feasibility study was to develop and test a coding scheme to characterize discharge communication between health-care providers (HCPs) and caregivers who visit the ED with their children. DESIGN: Th…

  • A framework for improving the responsiveness of policy through development evaluation

    Open Access•Stephen C Porter, Stephen R Porter•ARTICLE•Evaluation•2016•References: 5

Development evaluation, which prioritizes poverty reduction, potentially can increase the responsiveness of policy to poor people. Power imbalances, however, mean that although development evaluation has the possibility to be an important contributor to poverty reduction efforts, the interests of the poor are often excluded from the process of evaluation. In this article a framework that utilizes principal–agent concepts is detailed and applied, …

    Open Access•Jens Schmieder, Sherilyn C Fritz et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 9

This study combined multiple aquatic and terrestrial proxies, including diatoms, pollen, grain size, and bulk-sediment chemistry to reconstruct the history of three lake sites located in the central Sand Hills of Nebraska, USA. Long-term changes in effective moisture are evident at all sites, with significant changes occurring at ~6000, ~4000, and ~ 2000 cal. yr BP. Both aquatic and terrestrial indicators suggest that effective moisture was low b…

  • Who will guard the guardians? Amartya Sen's contribution to development evaluation

Stephen C Porter, Stephen Porter et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2009•References: 3

An Action Learning process integrated with Sen's Capability Approach can support development agencies to formulate interventions that enhance freedom. The authors show that putting this approach into practice has important implications for the manner in which ‘development’ is undertaken as an ideological project. It may help to examine and challenge those who hold power in development: the guardians. This finding is the result of an emergent Acti…

    Open Access•Stephen C Porter, Zhou Weijian•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

Eighteen radiocarbon-dated eolian and paleosol profiles within a 1500-km-long belt along the arid to semi-arid transition zone of north-central China record variations in the extent and strength of the East Asian summer monsoon during the Holocene. Dated paleosols and peat layers represent intervals when the zone was dominated by a mild, moist summer monsoon climate that favored pedogenesis and peat accumulation. Brief intervals of enhanced eolia…

  • Episodic gullying and paleomonsoon cycles on the Chinese Loess Plateau

    Open Access•Stephen C Porter, Zhaolong An et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

Buried gullies exposed in road excavations along the margin of a loess tableland on the Loess Plateau of central China lie within a thick loess-paleosol succession that spans ≥780,000 years. Constraining ages for gully cutting and filling are provided by dates of loess and soil units cut by and capping the paleogullies. An episode of gully cutting begins at the onset of an interglaciation and ceases as the gullies begin to fill with colluvium and…

  • Last Interglacial Climates

    Open Access•George Kukla, George J Kukla et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2002

The last interglacial, commonly understood as an interval with climate as warm or warmer than today, is represented by marine isotope stage (MIS) 5e, which is a proxy record of low global ice volume and high sea level. It is arbitrarily dated to begin at approximately 130,000 yr B.P. and end at 116,000 yr B.P. with the onset of the early glacial unit MIS 5d. The age of the stage is determined by correlation to uranium–thorium dates of raised cora…

  • Dependence of Near-Surface Magnetic Susceptibility on Dust Accumulation Rate and Precipitation on the Chinese Loess Plateau

    Open Access•Stephen C Porter, B Hallet et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2001

Magnetic susceptibility (MS) of surface sediment varies systematically across the Loess Plateau in central China, decreasing exponentially from >200×10 −8 m 3 /kg at the northern margin of the Qinling Shan to ≤30×10 −8 m 3 /kg near the southern margin of the Mu Us Desert. MS correlates highly with loess median grain size ( r 2 =0.79), which decreases south-southeastward across the plateau. It also correlates with mean annual temperature (MAT) and…

    Open Access•Stephen C Porter, Terry W Swanson•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1998

Calibrated radiocarbon dates of organic matter below and above till of the last (Fraser) glaciation provide limiting ages that constrain the chronology and duration of the last advance–retreat cycle of the Puget Lobe in the central and southeastern Puget Lowland. Seven dates for wood near the top of a thick proglacial delta have a weighted mean age of 17,420 ± 90 cal yr B.P., which is the closest limiting age for arrival of the glacier near the l…

  • Grain Size of Quartz as an Indicator of Winter Monsoon Strength on the Loess Plateau of Central China during the Last 130,000 Yr

    Open Access•Jule Xiao, Stephen C Porter et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1995

The Chinese loess-paleosol sequence constitutes an important record of variations in Asian monsoon climate over the past 2.4 myr. Magnetic susceptibility of loess and paleosols has been used as a proxy for summer monsoon intensity, while median grain size has been regarded as a measure of the strength of winter monsoon winds that were responsible for most of the dust transport. However, median grain size is only an approximate index of winter mon…

Radiocarbon dates of organic matter collected from ablation till or from the base of peat bogs in dead-ice deposits may postdate retreat of an active glacier terminus by hundreds or even thousands of years, and therefore provide only minimum estimates for the time of glacial maximum and the beginning of ice recession. Logs incorporated in Vashon till close to the drift border postdate recession of the Puget Lobe of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet by so…

  • Itkillik Glaciation in the Brooks Range, Northern Alaska

    Open Access•Thomas D Hamilton, Stephen C Porter•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1975

During the Itkillik Glaciation the Brooks Range supported an extensive mountain-glacier complex that extended for 750 km between 141° and 158°W longitude. Individual ice streams and piedmont lobes flowed as much as 50 km beyond the north and south margins of the range. Glaciers in the southern Brooks Range were longer than those farther north because of a southerly precipitation source, whereas those in the central and eastern part of the range w…

  • Equilibrium-line Altitudes of Late Quaternary Glaciers in the Southern Alps, New Zealand

Equilibrium-line altitudes (ELA's) of former glaciers in the Tasman River-Lake Pukaki drainage basin of the Southern Alps were reconstructed from glacial-geologic data on former ice limits by using an assumed accumulation-area ratio of 0.6 ± 0.05. Late Holocene (Neoglacial) ELA's were depressed 140 m below present levels, whereas those of four late Pleistocene ice advances were depressed 500 m (Birch Hill), 750 m (Tekapo), 875 m (Mt. John), and 1…

  • Glacier Peak Tephra in the North Cascade Range, Washington

    Open Access•Stephen C Porter•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1978

Pumiceous tephra, resulting from multiple eruptions of Glacier Peak volcano in late-glacial time, mantles much of the landscape in the eastern North Cascade Range and extends eastward beyond the Columbia River as a thinner discontinuous deposit. Within about 25 km of the source, the tephra is divisible into as many as nine layers, distinguishable in the field on the basis of color, grain size, thickness, and stratigraphic position. Four glacial drifts that are interstratified with lava flows and tephra layers on the upper slopes of Mauna Kea demonstrate that an ice cap formed repeatedly at the summit of the volcano during the middle and late Pleistocene. The oldest drift (Pohakuloa Formation) probably was deposited shortly after eruption of a lava flow having a K/Ar age of 278,500 ± 68,500 yr. Drift of the Waihu Formation, marked by a belt of subdued end moraines, is correl…

  • Pattern and Forcing of Northern Hemisphere Glacier Variations During the Last Millennium

    Open Access•Stephen C Porter•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1986

Time series depicting mountain glacier fluctuations in the Alps display generally similar patterns over the last two centuries, as do chronologies of glacier variations for the same interval from elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere. Episodes of glacier advance consistently are associated with intervals of high average volcanic aerosol production, as inferred from acidity variations in a Greenland ice core. Advances occur whenever acidity levels …

Analyses of Quaternary landscape evolution tend to focus on events associated with culminations of glacial and interglacial ages, but for most of Quaternary time, environments were intermediate in character. Average Quaternary glacial conditions, based on assessment of the marine isotope record, approximated those near the stage 2/stage 1 transition and during substages 5b and 5d; isotope stages 3 and 4 and substages 5a-d lie within one standard …

  • Magnetic susceptibility evidence of monsoon variation on the Loess Plateau of central China during the last 130,000 years

The Baxie loess section, just east of the Tibetan Plateau, contains evidence showing that the Asian monsoon climate experienced an abrupt reversal near the end of the last glacial age. Rapid deposition of dust under cool, dry full-glacial conditions gave way to an interval of soil development and reduced dust influx attributed to a strengthening of the warm, moist summer monsoon. A subsequent abrupt increase in dust deposition, a response to a we…
