  • Bypassing the press gallery: From Howard to Hanson

Open Access•Caroline Fisher, David Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Media International Australia•2018

Traditionally politicians have been dependent on political news media to get their message across to the public. The rise of social media means that politicians can bypass the Press Gallery and publish directly to their target audiences via Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. This article argues that Prime Minister John Howard’s (1996–2007) use of talk back radio and early forays on YouTube were pivotal in the trend towards ‘disin…

Using a state‐level integrated administrative database, we identified 1,202 emerging adults in Washington State who exited foster care between July 2010 and June 2012. Initial bivariate analyses were conducted to assess the association between candidate predictive factors and an indicator of homelessness in a 12‐…

  • Royden Loewen. Village among Nations: “Canadian” Mennonites in a Transnational World, 1916–2006

    David B Marshall•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2014

The story of the Canadian Mennonite experience is fundamentally altered in this groundbreaking and historiographically sophisticated study. Just as the Mennonites were compelled to flee Europe and settle in Canada in the late nineteenth century, they felt compelled to flee Canada and migrate to Central and South America throughout the twentieth century. Instead of representing Canada as a “new Jerusalem,” where Mennonites found refuge from religi…

Wright examines these churches' historical connections with the outside world and their newly cultivated interest in international politics. He argues that the clerical and missionary elite's vision of new internationalism was burdened by essentially Victorian ideas of the inherent superiority of Protestant Christianity, political democracy, and Anglo-Saxon race characteristics. Tensions between its traditional world view and the new realities of…

  • Secularizing the Faith: Canadian Protestant Clergy and the Crisis of Belief 1850-1940

    David Marshall, David B Marshall•BOOK•Secularizing the Faith•1992

The intellectual ferment of the Victorian era posed a substantial challenge to religious institutions. In Canada as elsewhere the focus of religious belief, epecially in the Protestant sects, shifted perceptibly away from spiritual concerns. David B. Marshall explores the ways in which the clergy responded to these changes.Faced with war, depression, and the absence of religious revival in the twentieth century, a crisis in theology emerged: the …

By ancient treaties betwixt Scotland and Norway, the islands of Orkney and Zetland were held to belong to the latter kingdom, but on the marriage of James III. of Scotland in 1468 to the Princess Margaret, a daughter of Christian I. of Denmark and Norway, the islands were pledged as security for the portion of the royal bride, and never redeemed.
