Judith Leyster’s A Boy and a Girl with a Cat and an Eel: An Intersectional Approach
In A Boy and a Girl with a Cat and an Eel, concerns about class, decorum, and civility intersected with contemporary dialogue about the distinction between humans and animals, specifically, how human children needed to be educated to be distinguished from the wild, uncivilized state of animals and peasants. Both animals held significance surrounding behaviors that separated the moral from the immoral; cats and eels were pets and food, and they we…

Khatt Islāmi: Sacred Scripts from Islamic Africa
Khatt Islāmi, a one-room gallery and online exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, presented objects from diverse media and geographical origin across Islamic Africa from the mid-1800s to today. (Fig. 1) The sixteen items have broad appeal to African immigrants in Minnesota, practitioners of Islam, students, and the general public. Objects in the exhibition derive from nine African nations: Mali, Togo, Nigeria, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, …

Dogs and Dogma: Perception and Revelation in Rembrandt's Presentation in the Temple , c . 1640
This essay interprets Rembrandts etching The Presentation in the Temple as a visual exposition of seventeenth-century ideas about art, nature, and God. Rembrandt created a composition that prompted meditation about humans capacity to know God through their perception of the visible world. As such, he promoted art as a humanistic tool for contemplation by drawing attention to its ability to elicit spiritual themes through the observation of human …
Inventing Exoticism: Geography, Globalism, and Europe's Early Modern World
African Art in Motion Minneapolis Institute of Arts Minneapolis, MN November 10, 2013–ongoing
The newly redesigned galleries for African art at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) provide a model for what progressive curation can look like in a comprehensive museum. Jan-Lodewijk Grootaers has been the curator of African art at the MIA since 2008, and clearly he has been busy reshaping and reinvigorating how viewers there encounter the collection. In conjunction with the gallery reopening in November 2013, the MIA hosted a symposium of…
A New Amsterdam
This essay examines Claes Jansz Visscher's map of New Netherland in the context of concurrent printed maps of Amsterdam and the United Provinces, especially Holland. Maps of New Netherland and Visscher's view of New Amsterdam reinforced Dutch commercial and colonial interests by likening the colonial outpost to its sister European city and trade emporium. The maps and prints published around 1650 reflect the WIC's emphasis on trade and its desire…
Climatology of the Forest-Tundra Ecotone at a Maritime Subarctic-Alpine Site, Mealy Mountains, Labrador
Climatological investigations were conducted from 2001 to 2009 in the central Mealy Mountains, Labrador (53.6 ̊ N), as part of interdisciplinary research on tree line ecology and climate change. The aim was to describe local climatic and edaphic variables along an altitudinal gradient from the closed forest edge to the alpine tundra and to relate recent changes in regional climate to potential changes in the forest tundra ecotone. Results show re…
Mapping Meaning: Ethnography and Allegory in Netherlandish Cartography, 1570-1655
As was the norm with frontispiece illustration in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the figures personifying the four continents on the title page to Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum were allegorical stand-ins, representing both a geographical place and its identifying features, symbolised by their appropriate accoutrements (fig. 1). They were not meant to serve as documentary evidence of diverse peoples, which partially explains…
Breathitt county gives thought to its children's health
As the Kentucky highway turns, a country road curves off to this one-room white framed building, traditionally constructed with four windows on either side and two front doors. Large red bold-face letters across the triangular area above the roof of the porch stand out as though announcing the name of an old homestead, SHOULDERBLADE. A flagstone walk leads to the porch, then a pause at the entrance
