Optimization of the Application of Commercial Hydrophobic Coatings for Natural Stone Protection and Preservation
Natural stone has been used worldwide in the construction of archaeological and historical heritage. However, its preservation continues to be threatened by weathering and degradation phenomena. Water is widely recognized as the most threatening external component that contributes to stone deterioration, increasing the need for the development of protective hydrophobic coatings to eliminate water penetration. This study intends to contribute to t…

Development of a Simple Method for Labeling and Identification of Protein Binders in Art
Easel paintings are assets with an important historic and cultural value. They usually possess a multi-tiered structure, composed of different layers some of which may present protein binders, making it important to identify these materials for restoration and conservation purposes. We propose the identification of different protein binders by a new fluorescent labeling method employing a coumarin based chromophore, C392STP (sodium(E/Z)-4-(4-(2-(…

The Pulp of Color: Toward a Notion of Expenditure in Ferreira Gullar's Neo-concrete Writings
Most scholarship on Neo-concretism tends either to ignore Ferreira Gullar's early poetry or simply reiterate the poet's own account of his book A Luta Corporal (1954) as concerned solely with the implosion of language. However, Gullar's book also engages with a sustained existential meditation on temporality and finitude through images of material expenditure, with pears and apples recurring throughout its pages as self-consuming entities that dr…
Moacir dos Anjos and Agnaldo Farias in Conversation with Felipe Scovino
In this interview art historian Felipe Scovino engages in conversation with two important Brazilian critics and curators, Moacir dos Anjos and Agnaldo Farias. Dos Anjos and Farias discuss their thoughts on the 29th São Paulo Biennial, which they jointly curated, and relevant topics, such as: the temporal gap between the international reception of Brazilian artworks and Brazilian critical thought; the friction between the artwork and a foreign con…
Bursting on the Scene: An Introduction
One would be hard-pressed to deny that the time is ripe for a special issue of an art journal dedicated entirely to Brazilian art. At least, the list of supporting evidence in this respect is exten
Phenomenological Openness: Historicist Closure: Revisiting the Theory of the Non-Object
This article undertakes a critical analysis of the central Neoconcrete theoretical text, Ferreira Gullar's 1959 Theory of the Non-Object. It historically accounts for its indebtedness to senior critic Mário Pedrosa's 1949 thesis on Gestalt theory and for the development of Gullar's ideas in the course of the critical debates apropos of abstract and Concrete art in the 1950s, and also challenges the supposedly neat correspondence between Gullar's …
Hélio Oiticica: Mapping the Constructive
This article explores the trajectory of Hélio Oiticica's commitment to the notion of the constructive, from his early career to the aftermath of his 1967 work Tropicália. It addresses Oiticica's particular way of dealing with the modernist legacy in the ever‐changing Brazilian cultural context, especially after the breakdown of the concretist and neoconcretist avant‐gardes in the early 1960s. The argument is staked on a side‐by‐side examination o…
Poder, Política, Urbano E a Caixa De Pandora
