  • John Henry Guy: A Man of Many Parts

    John Richard Edwards•ARTICLE•Accounting Historians Journal•2022

John Henry Guy worked in Britain and the United States throughout the first half of the twentieth century. He became the financial vice president of the M. Rumely Company of Indiana at just 31 years of age and, on his return to Britain, made a major contribution to the war effort while working as an accountant at the British Ministry of Munitions. It is also revealed that Guy took a broad view of accounting as a mechanism capable of achieving the…

  • Deconstructivism, postmodernism and their offspring: Disorders of our time

    John Edwards, John Richard Edwards•ARTICLE•Sociolinguistica - International…•2022

Our interest should always be aroused when scholars reject the testable approaches that have underwritten scientific development since the seventeenth century. Academic excursions in the arts and humanities need not adhere to scientific benchmarks, of course, and discussions relevant to science that are presented there need not always be subject to rigorous examination. When investigations move into social-science territory, however, more focused…

  • The Routledge Companion to Accounting History

Expert contributors from around the world explore the interfaces between accounting and the economy, society, culture and the polity. Account…

  • Mary I

John Edwards, John Richard Edwards•BOOK•Mary I•2017

The lifestory of Mary I—daughter of Henry VIII and his Spanish wife, Catherine of Aragon—is often distilled to a few dramatic episodes: her victory over the attempted coup by Lady Jane Grey, the imprisonment of her half-sister Elizabeth, the bloody burning of Protestants, her short marriage to Philip of Spain. This original and deeply researched biography paints a far more detailed portrait of Mary and offers a fresh understanding of her religiou…

  • Chandlerian image or mirror image? managerial and accounting control in the chemical industry: The case of Albright & Wilson, c.1892 to c.1923

Mark Matthews, Trevor Boyns et al.•ARTICLE•Business History•2003•Cited by: 1

Using archival evidence relating to Albright & Wilson (A&W), this article challenges the validity of Chandler's view, based mainly on the study of secondary sources, that personal capitalism retarded the development of more advanced forms of managerial organisation in Britain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While Chandler has criticised A&W for abrogating control of its North American subsidiaries to American managers, the a…

Open Access•Derek Matthews, Malcolm Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•1997•Cited by: 3

This article quantifies the growth in the number of professional accountants in British management, charts their influence over the past century, and analyses the causes. It is most likely that Britain initially spawned large numbers of accountants because of the particular nature of its capital market which led to demands for the independent auditing of company accounts. British companies then recruited their accountants from this ever growing p…

This paper utilises previously examined costing material for the Consett Iron Company Ltd in an attempt to throw some light on how business in the mid-Victorian period made key decisions. The nature of the costing information available to management, its limitations for decision-making purposes, and how the costing system was developed in response to the problems facing the company in the late 1860s, are examined. It is concluded that the company…

  • Social class differences and the identification of sex in children's speech

    Open Access•John Richard Edwards•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1979

Judges were asked to identify the sex of prepubertal children by listening to their tape-recorded voices. More incorrect guesses were made of working class girls than of their male counterparts. For middle-class children, however, the pattern was reversed, with more boys being misidentified as girls than the opposite. These findings are related to work demonstrating an association between masculinity and working-class speech, and to the ‘covert p…
