Understanding How the Effects of Conditional Conservatism Measurement Bias Vary with the Research Context
We re-examine previous seminal studies on conditional conservatism (CC) that apply the asymmetric timeliness (AT) measure of Basu [(1997). The conservatism principle and the asymmetric timeliness of earnings. Journal of Accounting and Economics, 24(1), 3–37. https://doi.org/10.1016/S0165-4101(97)00014-1] and compare the outcomes with those based on the modified AT (MAT) measure of Badia et al. [(2021). Debiasing the measurement of conditional con…
Annual Report Narratives and the Cost of Equity Capital: U.K. Evidence of a U-shaped Relation
We hypothesise and test for a U-shaped relation between the cost of equity capital and the level of disclosure in annual report narratives. Using a computer-generated word-count-based index of the level of disclosure in U.K. annual report narratives, we document a negative relation with the cost of equity capital at low levels of disclosure, and a positive relation at higher levels of disclosure, together implying the presence of an optimal level…
Infectious Causation of Abnormal Host Behavior: Toxoplasma gondii and Its Potential Association With Dopey Fox Syndrome
The apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii , the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, can infect all warm-blooded animals. T. gondii can subtly alter host behaviors-either through manipulation to enhance transmission to the feline definitive host or as a side-effect, or "constraint," of infection. In humans, T. gondii infection, either alone or in association with other co-infecting neurotropic agents, has been reliably associated with both subtle …

CEO Pay Contracts and IFRS Reconciliations
We examine whether UK managers exploit the discretion provided in the UK GAAP to IFRS reconciliation process to manage earnings and whether this earnings management is associated with the structure of the managers' compensation contracts. We use a comprehensive data set of mainly hand-collected information from the firms' annual reports to provide evidence that, given the existence of an accounting-related vesting target in their pay schemes, CEO…
The year of the insurgents: The 2008 US presidential campaign
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Bush's unpopularity at home and abroad and the looming threat of recession would have made a gripping drama of the 2008 presidential election campaign even without the ground-breaking emergence of the first credible black and female candidates for the White House. But the defeat of the Democratic establishment's front-runner, Hillary Clinton, by a little-known freshman Senator of mixed ancestry suggested that thi…

When the miners returned to work in March 1985, two things made them more bitter than they might otherwise have been. They left some seven hundred sacked men at home and eighty odd in prison. Shortly after the return, a ballot asking for a fifty pence weekly levy of all National Union of Mineworkers members tb support the sacked and imprisoned men was defeated. It was argued by some that the men in prison needed political support, and it was no l…
