  • Owners or traders? Conceptualizations of institutional investors and their relationship with corporate managers

    Open Access•John Hendry, Paul Sanderson et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2006•Cited by: 9•References: 41

We draw on a series of in-depth interviews with senior managers from institutional investors and large listed corporations to explore how different conceptualizations of institutional investors, their role in the corporate governance process, and their interactions with corporate management, are reflected in the accounts of the actors concerned. We find that the conceptualizations in terms of ownership and agency that dominate both academic and p…

  • Child Protection, Public Services and the Chimera of Market Force Efficiency

    Open Access•Richard Barker, Richard W Barker•ARTICLE•Children & Society•1996

The different agencies and professions that contribute towards child protection services have all recently had to begin to take account of the impact of market forces on their activities, yet detailed consideration of the consequences of this are slow to emerge. This article begins to consider these changes for child protection services. Having briefly described the child protection systems in England and Wales, it looks at the theoretical underp…

  • John Patrick Sarsfield's Santa Clara

    Open Access•Richard Barker•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•1993•Cited by: 1

It was a pleasure for this writer to see the two articles in IJNA, 21.4, on John Sarsfield's Santa Clara, after following the field work that led to it, and providing many of the documentary sources from 1983. John had contacted me through the kind offices of Ruth Baker [widow of W. A. (Bill) Baker; she died last year] and I would like to record our indebtedness to that charming and knowledgeable lady, who took such interest in any extension of h…

  • Siblings of children in care or accommodation

Andy Bilson, Richard Barker•ARTICLE•Practice•1992•Cited by: 2

The Parental Contact Research Project provides evidence from a census of 1068 children that, despite the 1989 Children Act's focus on contact, work with sibling groups remains a neglected area of practice. Children in care or accommodation frequently had complex family arrangements with siblings looked after, adopted and in the community. Three quarters of the children with siblings in care or accommodation were separated from some or all of them…

Richard Barker, Angie Ash•ARTICLE•Practice•1988•Cited by: 1

The article describes an experiment in North Wales involving a CQSW course sub-contracting the organisation and support of its students' placements to a separate project jointly managed by the college concerned and other local educational institutions and agencies. On the basis of an evaluation of this experience some tentative conclusions are offered about such matters as the utility of jointly managed projects in addressing basic structural def…

  • Selection for social work training (2)

    Penny Gutridge, Richard Barker•ARTICLE•Practice•1987

The focus of this paper is upon the need for congruence between the selection experience of intending social work students and the principles for practice presented to them in professional training. It was inspired by a valuable preceding paper by Barbara Symons and Caroline Morgan on the subject of selection for social work training, and it seeks to share a contrasting model of practice for consideration. Whilst this paper reaffirms the importan…
