  • Aesthetic Pursuits: Essays in Philosophy of Art

    Open Access•Alan Roberts•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Aesthetics•2019•Cited by: 1

Aesthetic Pursuits is Jerrold Levinson’s newest collection of essays and is marketed as a complement to his 2015 volume Musical Concerns.1 Whereas Musical Concerns was comprised exclusively of essays on music, Aesthetic Pursuits consists of essays on a variety of topics. As the broad title suggests, these topics are relatively disparate and wide-ranging, including issues of film, humour, literature, beauty and the emotions. All the essays, with o…

  • Humour is a Funny Thing

Alan Roberts•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Aesthetics•2016•Cited by: 1

This paper considers the question of how immoral elements in instances of humour affect funniness. Comic ethicism is the position that each immoral element negatively affects funniness and if their cumulative effect is sufficient, then funniness is eliminated. I focus on Berys Gaut’s central argument in favour of comic ethicism; the merited response argument. In this journal, Noe&x0308;l Carroll has criticized the merited response argument as ill…

Alan Roberts, Thomas F Cash et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consulting and…•2006

Proponents of the sociocultural model of eating disorders have suggested that ethnic differences in body dissatisfaction may be diminishing as the thin ideal of beauty becomes more widely disseminated among minority women. In a meta-analysis, the authors examined temporal trends in Black-White differences and also examined whether these differences generalize across various age groups and measures. Results confirmed more favorable body image eval…

Although social workers have been providing outreach to at-risk youths, gang members, offenders, and crime victims for a century, the term "forensic social work" has not previously been widely used. A unify…

  • On the comparison of literary and scientific styles: The letters and articles of Max Born, F. R. S

Open Access•H C Bolton, Alan Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•1995

There has been much scholarly activity in literary textual analysis; problems have included the literary analysis of characters, the disputed authorship of texts, hidden insertions in another hand and the continuation of incomplete texts. Classically the interpretations of these literary problems are given in terms of literary judgements, but there are no reasons to forbid numerical arguments based on statistical techniques, and it is to be hoped…
