Irrational Exuberance
Émile Zola's L'Argent has been relatively neglected by critical studies. This interdisciplinary study adds to earlier approaches by examining the ways in which Zola's novel anticipates strands of contemporary behavioural finance, notably in its analysis of the psychological and social conditions behind 'irrational exuberance' and a speculative stock-market bubble. A few avenues are explored, inspired by Robert Shiller's Irrational Exuberance: pre…
Illustrating a sentimental journey
When the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936 the Irish novelist and playwright Kate O’Brien felt compelled to respond. The result was her travelogue, Farewell Spain (1937 O’Brien, Kate. (1937) 2006. Farewell Spain. London: Virago. [Google Scholar]). O’Brien’s antipathy for the Franco regime is apparent as she takes the reader on a sentimental journey that is accompanied by a series of 13 pencil-drawn illustrations by Mary O’Neill. A series of let…

Design/methodology/approach The research design combines 40 in‐depth verbal interviews with male butchers, with the use of photoelicitation and photovoice,…
Regarding Derrida

Design/methodology/approach – Derridean concepts, mainly located in literary criticism, are adapted to image research. Findings – The paper presents four concepts of visual deconstruction: logocentric vision; close reading images; seeing the Other; and problematising not solutionising the image. Research limitations/implica…

The paper presents a reading of performativity theory and discusses the performativity of using visual methods in the research process. Findings The pape…
