  • From Gym Rat to Rock Star! Negotiating Constraints to Leisure Experience via a Strengths and Substitutability Approach

    David J Williams•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This commentary shares my recent personal experience of having to find a new and realistic way to strength-train, my longstanding serious physically-active leisure preference, during the recent gym closures and widespread social restrictions in place due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. While thoroughly considering how to negotiate specific leisure experience constraints, I incorporate familiar concepts and processes from the strengths per…

  • Are Sex and Pornography Addiction Valid Disorders? Adding a Leisure Science Perspective to the Sexological Critique

    David J Williams, J N Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 67

Over the last 30 years, there has been a growing trend among both professionals and nonprofessionals in applying an addiction framework to understand frequent sexual behavior and pornography viewing. However, sexual scientists have identified serious methodological problems in applying an addiction model to such behavior and have noted that this movement appears to be largely morally, ideologically, and politically motivated. The scientific estab…

  • Positive Sexuality as a Guide for Leisure Research and Practice Addressing Sexual Interests and Behaviors

    David J Williams, Emily E Prior et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 55

There is a growing interest among leisure scholars to investigate a wide range of diverse sexual topics from a leisure science perspective. However, leisure experts sometimes struggle with issues surrounding their topics that are firmly rooted in broader socio-historical controversies. Indeed, these controversies continue to play out in fierce academic and professional battles, referred to as the “sex wars,” that began several decades ago. Recent…

  • An Empirical Exploration of Leisure-Related Themes and Potential Constraints across Descriptions of Serial Homicide Cases

    David J Williams, J N Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Forensic experts commonly state that many serial homicide offenders kill for the pleasure of it. At the same time, a small number of leisure scientists have suggested that serial murder may be a particular form of deviant leisure. Despite such suggestions, there has been little scholarly exploration of serial homicide from a leisure science perspective. This exploratory study adds to the existing literature by analyzing content of multiple key te…

  • Application of the Serious Leisure Perspective to Intrinsically Motivated Serial Homicide

    David J Williams, Jolene Vincent•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2019•References: 35

This article briefly introduces the multidisciplinary field of leisure sciences before exploring how leisure theory, particularly the Serious Leisure Perspective, can provide important insights into better understanding some forms of serial homicide. It is well known that many serial homicide offenders kill for the pleasure and enjoyment that such behavior provides them. Such expressive cases can be understood as deviant casual, serious, or proje…

  • “Mediterranean Religions” or Abrahamic Traditions

    David J Williams•ARTICLE•English Language Notes•2018

Since we do not find a religion identified as Mediterranean alongside Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, we might want to conclude that it does not exist independently. Mediterranean religion is found in the complexities of the lived religion of the region rather than as a dogmatic cohesion.1 At the most basic level the term Mediterranean religion can be applied to those religions or mysticisms founded or widely practiced in the geography of the M…

  • Entering the Minds of Serial Murderers: The Application of Forensic Leisure Science to Homicide Research

    David J Williams, DJ Williams•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 21

Years ago, a small handful of leisure scholars suggested that serial murder may be a form of leisure. However, to date this possibility remains virtually unexplored. This article draws from recent research to share reflections and rich, new insights on how leisure science may provide important contributions to serial homicide researchers and law enforcement personnel. At the same time, exploring such intersections offers leisure scholars new ways…

  • The Future of Effective Social Work Practice: Broadening Multidisciplinary Collaboration and Increasing Flexibility

    David J Williams, DJ Williams•ARTICLE•Social Work•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 3

I believe that one of the greatest strengths of the social work profession is its generalist foundation, which welcomes and uses knowledge from other helping professions. Indeed, the generalist approach and its welcoming of relevant knowledge from multiple disciplines allows social workers flexibility in helping to resolve diverse potential issues at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. Such flexibility and creativity have always been valuable to …

  • Are we afraid of our selves? Self-narrative research in leisure studies

    Audrey R Giles, David J Williams•ARTICLE•World Leisure & Recreation•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 11

During the past decade, leisure scholars have started becoming more comfortable with applying to their work newer approaches to knowledge and research methodologies, many of which are being utilized in other social sciences. Self-narrative research, or autoethnography, is a form of inquiry that raises questions regarding separations and interactions of personal and professional identities. While personal narrative research has been in use since t…

  • Physical Activity as a Helpful Adjunct to Substance Abuse Treatment

David J Williams, William B Strean•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work Practice…•2004

While limited research exists on the topic of physical activity as an adjunct to substance abuse treatment, a review of relevant multidisciplinary literature indicates a logical rationale for its potential benefits to recovery from addiction. This article provides an overview of common variables that contribute to addictive disease and summarizes the relationship of regular physical activity to improvements on many of these variables. The stages …

The current study investigated the psychometric properties of the Interaction with Disabled Persons Scale (IDP). An exploratory factor analysis ( N=358) found three factors underlying attitudes toward individuals with disabilities as measured by the IDP. These factors were labeled social discomfort, empathy, and fear of having the disability. The estimates of reliability were acceptable for the three factors. The putative factor struoture was rec…

  • Regulating the Accountability of Charitable Organisations: The Victorian Experience

Open Access•Mark Mcgillivray, Claudio Romano et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Public…•1987

This paper concentrates on the regulation of charitable organisations in the state of Victoria, where governments have sought to determine the bona fides of these organisations by obtaining their financial reports. A survey of the financial reports of registered Victorian charities indicates, however, that a significant proportion of charities do not supply this information. This deficiency indicates that government judgements about the bona fide…

  • Voltaire and the Patronage of Pierre Corneille

    David Williams, David J Williams•ARTICLE•Eighteenth-Century Studies•1972

THE GENERAL OUTLINES of Voltaire's position with regard to the baleful effects of patronage on France's national and cultural life are familiar to most students of the French literary scene in the eighteenth century. Voltaire's proposals for the reform of French traditions of patronising the arts were radical, and over the years he developed an angry polemic around the general problem of the continuing subservience of French artists to the privat…
