Open Access•Viktor Vig, Árpád Szabó et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: This year the 29th of August is the 500th anniversary of one of the most decisive battles of Late Medieval Europe. • Examination of perimortem injuries to the postcranial skeleton in the human bone material from mass grave 3 associated with the battle of Mohacs (August 29, 1526 CE)

Open Access•Viktor Vig, Fanni Gellai et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: The mass graves linked to the Battle of Mohacs (1526) are located at the Mohacs National Memorial Site in southern Hungary. Historical sources suggest that around 2,000 prisoners were executed after the battle and buried in these graves. After excavations in 1960 and 1976, mass grave 3 was re-excavated between 2020 and 2022, enabling detailed archaeological and anthropological analyses. Objective: To conduct an osteoarchaeological ana…

Open Access•Árpád Szabó, Luca Kis et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: Bioarchaeological investigations aim to reconstruct the biological profiles of past populations through the systematic analysis of human skeletal remains. Facial reconstruction is a specialized approach that complements these analyses by providing visual representations of historical individuals. Objective: To present the comprehensive biological and facial reconstruction of individual No. 95, recovered from a mass grave associated wi…

Open Access•Tímea Mai, György Pálfi et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: One of the five known mass graves associated with the Battle of Mohacs preserves the remains of approximately 370 individuals. Preliminary forensic observations suggested that many of the fatal injuries were more consistent with execution than battlefield combat. Objective: To identify patterns of perimortem trauma and evaluate the hypothesis of mass execution. Materials and methods: A representative sample of 45 individuals was selec…

  • Preliminary results of the paleopathological analysis of the human skeletal remains from mass grave 4 at the Mohacs National Memorial Site (1526 CE), Hungary

Open Access•Lili Vágvölgyi, Réka Kocsmár et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: At the Battle of Mohacs (1526 CE), the Christian army was defeated by an Ottoman force nearly three times its size. Historical sources indicate that during the battle, captives were taken, and about 2 thousand captives were executed two days later. Objective: To better understand the fate of these victims, we examined patterns of perimortem trauma in the skeletons of the mass grave IV (237 individuals) at the Mohacs National Memorial …

  • The Mohacs National Memorial Mass Graves: Years of struggle for the researchers of the university of Szeged

Open Access•György Pálfi, Zsolt Bereczki et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Objective: To present the progress, challenges, and preliminary anthropological results of the multidisciplinary investigation of the Mohacs mass graves. Subjects and methods: As the Mohacs National Memorial Mass Grave 3 excavation could not be completed in 2020, additional field campaigns were conducted in 2021 and 2022, the latter involving an international team. Following excavation, the skeletal remains were transferred to the University of S…

  • From participation to relational infrastructuring: Rethinking inclusion in contemporary placemaking

Open Access•Milagros Hurtig, Jorge Mosquera et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2026

This article advances a relational understanding of placemaking, examining how inclusive urban development emerges through the interplay of institutional structures, civic agency, and participatory design. Moving beyond the binary of top-down versus bottom-up planning, the study proposes the Relational Placemaking for Inclusion (RPI) framework, which comprises three interdependent dimensions: temporality, institutional resonance, and design agenc…

  • Effects of ethnic minority culture on organizational trust and knowledge management

    Open Access•Andrea Bencsik, Árpád Szabó et al.•ARTICLE•Economics & Sociology•2022•References: 1

The need for organisational trust as a prerequisite for successful market operation is an area of frequent research today. Our study has examined the thinking and behaviour of organisations operating in minority cultures that live in proximity to the motherland in terms of trust-based organisational functioning, with particular attention to the knowledge management process. The research has tested two neighbouring cultures (Slovak and Romanian) o…

  • A previously undescribed cranial surgery technique in the Carpathian Basin 10th century CE

Open Access•Luca Kis, Balázs Tihanyi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022•References: 5

In this paper, the authors give a new insight to the indication and preparation of trepanations through the analysis of a newly discovered case of 10th‐century‐CE surgical trepanation found in the material of Sárrétudvari‐Poroshalom. We also intend to outline the implications of this particular case to the general methodology of trepanation research. We estimated basic anthropological data (sex and age‐at‐death) and performed analyses of paleopat…

Open Access•Melinda Benkő, Bence Bene et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Planning•2021

The 21st century has brought fundamental changes in the development of cities, with the spread of ICT and the rise of digitalization. The new technologies are increasingly making their mark on urban planning and policy as well. The question of how contemporary urban planning is adapting to new challenges is particularly relevant as neighborhoods built in previous centuries and decades by traditional planning methods are now increasingly confronte…

  • Agriculture, work and products: The effects of the market on the economics of an agricultural settlement

    Árpád Szabó•ARTICLE•Acta Ethnographica Hungarica•2013

In this article I discuss the role of the market on the different branches of the agriculture in a Transylvanian village analysing the complex forms of the market and market behaviour that exist in a peculiar rural settlement. The village once had a sort of regional centre role where families who earned a living from non-agricultural activities lived in high number but this role had faded with socialist modernisation, thus nowadays the main secto…

  • Fading regional borders? The viewpoint of rural economy and way of life

    Árpád Szabó•ARTICLE•Acta Ethnographica Hungarica•2012

The paper discusses the rural economic factors of the regional differences and their fading that started roughly with the second agricultural revolution and got an impetus with collectivization and — after re-privatization — with the decline of agrarian activities and arising of new forms of consumption. Thus the paper analyzes on one hand the process of uniformization accompanied by the spreading of globalized — or at least nationalized — patter…
