Reservation and the Republic: One Constitution, Two Amendments and Seven Decades
This note places the recent 103rd Amendment of the Constitution for introducing 10 per cent reservation for ‘economically weaker’ sections of the upper castes in the larger context of the ongoing effort to redress caste inequalities in law. It compares this amendment to the First Amendment to the Constitution of 1951 and argues that these two amendments describe a full circle. The law seems to have moved from a stance where castelessness was the …
The teaching of darshan and its purpose1
S rinivas, M. N. (1916–99)
M. N. Srinivas was India's best‐known social anthropologist of the latter half of the twentieth century. A noted exponent of the structural–functional approach imbibed from his teachers at Oxford, A. R. Radcliffe‐Brown and E. E. Evans‐Pritchard, Srinivas helped to establish social anthropology in postcolonial India as a rigorous, fieldwork‐based discipline. He insisted on the unity of social anthropology and sociology, and was one of the pioneers…
I ndia, Anthropology in
This synoptic survey of anthropology and sociology in India is framed within the larger history of the subcontinent's successive encounters with colonialism, nationalism, the developmental state, and neoliberal globalization. In India, social anthropology and sociology have been closely intertwined, and colonialism has been a major influence. After independence, the twin disciplines had to find space within the larger context of a developmentalis…

Inclusion versus excellence: Caste and the framing of fair access in Indian higher education
Written for a non-Indian audience, this paper outlines the main issues involved in the current controversy around the expansion of India's positive action programmes to new caste groups and to elite segments of the higher education system. It is concerned mainly with the ideological aspects of the controversy over quotas or ‘reservations’in state-funded elite professional colleges for the ‘Other Backward Classes’, this being the official term for…
Sharing sovereignty: Negotiating inequality & difference in postnational societies
If I am privileged to be present here today as an Indian sociologist invited by the South African Sociological Association to participate in its XlVth Annual Conference, I am indeed doubly honoured to be invited, in addition, to address you as a keynote speaker. My heartfelt thanks for this honour go to all of you as SASA members, and to your President, Dr. Mokong Simon Mapadimeng. I understand that this invitation is also intended to give concre…
Symposium: Social Science Research in the Contemporary World: The Problems and Possibilities of ‘Globalisation’
In this brief note, the A. is concerned with two main questions : first, what does globalisation mean in the broad context of social sciences research in countries like India ?, and, second, in what ways might globalisation specifically affect research in disciplines like sociology and social anthropology ? Much of what follows is inevitably speculative, and is intended to identity issues that urgently need our collective attention

After Culture: Renewed Agendas for the Political Economy of India
Political economy in India has lost its earlier dynamism; can the insights of recent culture-centred perspectives help revive it? This speculative paper outlines a research agenda that might do this by focusing on two important but under-researched themes in the history of the Indian present: the shift in the dominant economic ideology from development to adjustment, and the growth and differentiation of the middle classes. The ideology of develo…
