THIS paper deals with a neglected problem in the social stratification of occupations. Most research in this area has been concerned with prestige differences among occupations and begs the question of intra-occupational variability.' It is suggested that there may be as much or more variability in prestige within many occupational categories as among them. The central concern of this inquiry, one phase of the Harvard School Executive Role Studie…

  • Social Class Identification in the Urban Community

Neal Gro, Neal Gross•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1953•Cited by: 16

O NE approach to study of social classes is to view them as referent groups. In contrast to a stratum which consists of a number of individuals occupying a relatively similar position on some objective characteristic such as income or occupation, a class is viewed as a phenomenon in fullest sense of word. That is, a man's class is a part of his ego, a feeling on his part of belongingness to something; and identification with something larger than…

  • Some Methodological Problems of Eight-Hour Interviews

Neal Gro, Neal Gross et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1953•Cited by: 1

In a study of the occupational role of school superintendents a relatively unstructured question approach failed to tap role-conflict situations, whereas a combination of a structured check-list series of questions and probes, followed by an open-ended series of questions, succeeded. The role-within-a-role procedure for the interviewer was highly conducive to effective rapport. This research experience suggests that respondent fatigue may depend …

  • On Group Cohesiveness

Neal Gro, Neal Gross et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1952•Cited by: 19

In certain studies of the cohesiveness of small groups the operational definition of cohesiveness are logically deficient because they do not measure the dimensions of cohesiveness as nominally defined by the investigators. These studies are empirically deficient because single measurement of cohesiveness of the same groups are not positively and highly correlated. A unitary concept of cohesiveness is unacceptable because of the incorrect assumpt…

  • Cultural Variables in Rural Communities

Neal Gro, Neal Gross•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1948

Evidence from four published community studies supports the hypothesis of certain relationships between cultural isolation and the system of interaction, the family, religion, and education. The study tends to support Redfield's tentative conclusions regarding the relationship among cultural variables; however, a possible limitation of his analysis is suggested
