This research examines the procedural and substantive legitimacy of the Australian capital city wine show system as a cultural consecration project. The analysis is based on the ratings of 5654 wines by judges at four capital city wine shows in 2007. Large wineries are more likely to enter wines into these competitions than small wineries. This article examines the history of the Baseball Hall of Fame as a cultural consecration project. It argues that the legitimacy of any consecration project depends on the cultural authority of the organization initiating the project, the rigorous selection procedures used by this organization, the relative selectivity of its outcomes, and the existence of objective differences in merit between the consecrated and the unconsecrated. However, prio…

  • Identifying Shifts in Policy Regimes

    Open Access•John L Campbell, Michael Patrick Allen et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science History•2001•References: 27

One of the mainstays of political sociology and political science for generationshas been debate about the conditions under which one policy regime —that is, a distinct mix of public policies—is replaced by another. For instance, a vast literature seeks to identify the factors that caused the shift from orthodox to Keynesian policy regimes in the United States and Europe after the Second World War, as well as the shift during the 1980s to more co…

  • State Revenue Extraction from Different Income Groups

Michael Patrick Allen, Michael Allen et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1994•Cited by: 14•References: 14

We examine the conditions that affected the progressivity of the individual income tax in the United States between 1916 and 1986. A multivariate time-series analysis shows how macroeconomic conditions, state imperatives, the organizational capacities of social classes, and political conditions have affected the progressivity and the symbolic component of the income tax. Progressivity is measured by the difference between the effective tax rates …

  • Conventional and Optimal Interval Scores for Ordinal Variables

    Open Access•Michael Patrick Allen, Michael Allen•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•1976•References: 26

Sociologists are often confronted with a discrepancy between the level of measurement required by the linear statistical model and that characteristic of most variables of sociological interest. This problem is typically resolved by the use of conventional scores which assign equal interval scores to the categories of ordinal variables subject only to a monotonicity constraint. Alternatively, it is often possible to obtain optimal interval scores…
