  • The Uniquely Religious: Grounding the Social Scientific Study of Religion Anew

    Robert W Friedrichs•ARTICLE•Sociological Analysis•1985

The dominance of the classical paradigm in the social scientific study of religion has been undermined by the increasing capacity of secular agents and interpretations to fulfill the functions the “masters” assigned the sacred. An alternative is offered in which the uniqueness of religious faith is seen to lie in its grounding in awesome apprehensions of the “trustability” of existence which transcend highly salient experiences of finitude (affir…

Weeding through a file drawer other day I ran across something I'd written in halcyon days of my academic adolescence when I was young and tenured. It was, I flinched at recalling, a challenge flung in faces of my peers in academy to view nature of our professional role as an opportunity to witness in and out of classroom to our existential commitments. It announced, among other things, that academy possessed the freedom to encourage its facultie…

    Robert W Friedrichs•ARTICLE•Sociological Analysis•1971

Following Thomas Kuhn's conception of the periodic revolutions that interrupt the normal accretive growth of a science, an analogy is drawn between the typology of theological postures (“teleology,” “apocalypse,” and “prophecy”) offered by Harvey Cox and paradigms central to an understanding of the crisis confronting contemporary sociology . Correlated with the teleological stance is the “system” image that stood as sociologically orthodox throug…
