There is a tough question in the sociology of law facing the nation. It is: To what extent is the inferior education of Negroes due to a failure to enforce the fourteenth amendment, which requires that the states must treat all its citizens equally and without discrimination? There may be more felicitous phrasings of the problem, but this puts it bluntly

    Arnold M Rose, Arthur E Prell•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1955•Cited by: 12

There is a significant discrepancy between the law and popular judgment as to how the law should be applied in assigning punishments for thirteen studied felonies. This probably reflects "cultural lag" in the law as compared to pupular conceptions, although the cases studied are too unrepresentative for generalization. Background characteristics of the judges are related to the judgments made. Many subjects were willing to be deliberately nonequa…

  • Rumor in the Stock Market

    Arnold M Rose•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•1951•Cited by: 5

Because decisions regarding activity on the stock market must be made rapidly if they are to be effective and because most traders do not have the information necessary for making acurate predictions, rumor exerts a particularly significant influence on those who trade in the market. In this article the author describes the circumstances promoting rumor and a measurable index of rumor which he calls the "factor of stickiness

  • The Social Psychology of Desertion from Combat

    Arnold M Rose•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1951•Cited by: 5

T HE concept of crime has been extended in recent years-by studies of white collar crime' and of black market operations,2 for example-and each extension opens up new understanding of the social and psychological factors behind the breaking of laws. This report similarly concerns an atypical crime-desertion among combat infantrymen-and it also has obliged the investigator to consider some causes which are probably irrelevant in the explanation of…

  • A Research Note on the Influence of Immigration on the Birth Rate

    Arnold M Rose•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1942•Cited by: 1

Migration from an area of high birth rate-rural Italy-to an area of low birth rate-urban United States-would be expected to low the birth rate if assimilation were the only relevant influence accompnying migration. Data for a sample of 1,348 Italian families in Chicago reveal that the birth rate of married women not separated from their husbands when migrating was higher in the United States than in Italy, holding age constant. Thus the higher ec…

    Arnold M Rose, Arnold Rose•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•1945

WE WANNA GO HOME," the G.I.'s shouted, and the editorials gravely debated Array demobilization policies. But behind homesickness, as every thoughtful person knows, is a more important problem of the general morale of the American soldier. Mr. Rose's discussion of that general morale is both informed and frank. An experienced sociologist and an assistant author of Gunnar Myrdal's famous American Dilemma, he spent eighteen months in Italy and North…

  • The Social Structure of the Army

Arnold M Rose, Arnold Rose•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1946•Cited by: 2

The bases of the Army's socia structure are held to be (1) the modern American democratic tradition; (2) the medieval feudal tradition; and (3) the formal, written rules, regulations, and directives. An examination of situations where these three come into conflict with one another shows that the feudal tradition is still the strongest of the three. But the other two modify the effects of the feudal tradition in various ways, and the long-run tre…

    Arnold M Rose•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1948

The need for selection of research problems and data imposes an obligation upon scientists to specify the criteria for selection. The possibility of securing universal generalizations is limited in social science, necessitating a shift toward methodological and practical studies. There is nothing unscientific about doing practical research, provided that the hypotheses are put in proper form; nor is there any opposition between theoretical and pr…

  • Interest in the Living Arrangements of the Urban Unattached

    Arnold M Rose•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1948•Cited by: 1

A historical study of expert and lay interest in and attention to a social problem leads to the hypothesis that a felt need on the part of a significant proportion of the population does not necessarily give rise to collective interest in meeting it. The need for adequate living arrangements for unattached people in cities, including their requirements for housing and also for eating, recreation, and clothing care, is studied as it is expressed i…
