The Social Prison: Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Dispossessed as Postanarchist Critical Utopia
Ursula K. Le Guin’s classic work of anarchist literature, The Dispossessed (1974), is preoccupied with the issue of imprisonment. This is hardly surprising given anarchism’s longstanding critical engagement with the prison as state apparatus. For classical anarchists, the prison represents one of the most vile and visible examples of state repression. However, while the abolition of prisons constitutes one of the fundamental goals of anarchism, t…

Modernization and Inequality in Pre-Famine Ireland: An Exploratory Spatial Analysis
In recent debates over the utility of colonial and postcolonial theory for understanding the Irish past, Stephen Howe has suggested that Ireland be conceived as a seedbed for “hybrid forms” of colonialism. This essay presents a way to operationalize that suggestion by taking advantage of variants on classic central-place theory that have been proposed by students of developing countries. The analysis exploits the relatively rich demographic, admi…

Nancy J. Curtin, The United Irishmen: Popular Politics in Ulster and Dublin, 1791–1798. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1994
In the 1970s Irish historians were expected to look at the 1790s primarily through the lens of the contemporary Northern Ireland crisis: Did the alliance of Presbyterian radicals and Catholics in the events leading to the 1798 rebellion demonstrate that the Ulster Protestants were “really Irish” and reconciliation inevitable once “the British” stopped interfering? Or did the breakdown of that alliance demonstrate how ineradicable was the sectaria…

Landlords and Tenants in Mid-Victorian Ireland
This book investigates the relations between landlords and tenants in Ireland between the great famine and the land war. Based on a remarkably wide range of primary sources, most notably collections of estate papers, it is a comprehensive and wide-ranging analysis. It explores evictions, rents, tenant rights, estate management, agrarian outrages, and tenants' resistance to landlords. The book questions many assumptions about landlord-tenant relat…
