Witnessing, saving, serving? A relational approach to community development in the suburbs of a global city
This paper considers the community development practice of The Salvation Army in a public housing estate in Sydney, Australia. Drawing on interviews with community members, officers, staff, and volunteers from The Salvation Army, we explore the transformative potential of relational, rather than transactional, community development practices. In accepting the theological principle of imago Dei as the foundation for its practice, The Salvation Arm…

The Autonomy Paradox
Our research examines how knowledge professionals use mobile email devices to get their work done and the implications of such use for their autonomy to control the location, timing, and performance of work. We found that knowledge professionals using mobile email devices to manage their communication were enacting a norm of continual connectivity and accessibility that produced a number of contradictory outcomes. Although individual use of mobil…
Charles Le Maistre
Life in the Trading Zone
In our study of an interactive marketing organization, we examine how members of different communities perform boundary-spanning coordination work in conditions of high speed, uncertainty, and rapid change. We find that members engage in a number of cross-boundary coordination practices that make their work visible and legible to each other, and that enable ongoing revision and alignment. Drawing on the notion of a “trading zone,” we suggest that…
How Business Enterprises Use Technology
Today, we are all aware of the importance of technology to modern business, including process technologies as well as consumer and industrial products incorporating technology. The significant role of technology in business (and vice versa) is not, of course, new. Although the history of technology and business history have different professional organizations and often focus on different theoretical and empirical phenomena, the large number of h…
It's About Time
In this paper we propose the notion of temporal structuring as a way of understanding and studying time as an enacted phenomenon within organizations. We suggest that through their everyday action, actors produce and reproduce a variety of temporal structures which in turn shape the temporal rhythm and form of their ongoing practices. A focus on temporal structuring, combined with a practice perspective, allows us to bridge the subjective-objecti…
Cultures of Control (review)
The essays collected in Cultures of Control explore the history of the notion of control and its connections with culture and technology. In assembling the volume, Miriam R. Levin has brought work from cultural history and the history of ideas together with work in the history of technology. Unsurprisingly, with a topic so large and diffuse, the volume is uneven and imperfectly unified. Still, it suggests a nexus of control, technology, and cultu…
Marchés électroniques et hiérarchies électroniques
Electronic links are becoming increasingly important in the inter-and intra-firm spheres. The present article develops an analytical frame for defining this evolution. The growing use of electronic interconnections can be considered as the combination of three forces : the effect of electronic communication, the effect of electronic brokerage and the effect of electronic integration. The nature of these interconnections - electronic hierarchy or …

Book Reviews Exploring the Black Box: Technology, Economics, and History. By Nathan Rosenberg. New York: Cambridge University Press, 1994. Pp. 274; figures, notes, index. $54.95 (cloth); $17.95 (paper). Nathan Rosenberg’s Exploring the Black Box: Technology, Economics, and History explores technological change, an area consigned by most economists to a black box, from the point ofview of economics and economic history. Like his earlier Inside the…
Helping CSCW applications succeed
This study found that the use of a computer conferencing system in an R&D lab was significantly shaped by a set of intervening actors—mediators—who actively guided and manipulated the technology and its use over time. These mediators adapted the technology to its initial context and shaped user interaction with it; over time, they continued to modify the technology and influence use patterns to respond to changing circumstances. We argue that wel…

Co-evolution of Information-Processing Technology and Use
Punched-card tabulating equipment, an important commercial predecessor of the computer, was used for processing large amounts of data in many business firms during die first half of the twentieth century. Life insurance was an information-intensive business dependent on firms' abilities to manage large quantities of data. This article examines both the role that tabulating machinery played in shaping insurance firms' business processes and the si…
The Age of Information
We are now entering a completely new age - The Age of Information. Just as the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions produced enormous changes, information technology is completely altering our lives. Indeed, some patterns have already started to emerge. 'The Age of Information' provides a unique account of the chronological development of computer communications, tracing the origins of the present information technology revolution and explaini…
