  • Testing a “Push–Pull” theory of work commitment among organizational professionals

    Open Access•Brian J McAulay, Gerald Zeitz et al.•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2006•Citada por: 1•Referências: 13

Writers have suggested that the current trend toward decreased job security requires employees to commit more strongly to newly “professionalized” occupations to compensate for social and resource support no longer received from their employers. And it has sometimes been implied that such a shift toward increased professional commitment will arise naturally as organizational commitment is whittled away by perceived job insecurity. We propose that…

  • Age and Work Satisfaction in a Government Agency

    Open Access•Gerald Zeitz•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1990•Citada por: 6•Referências: 30

A "situational"perspective on employee attitudes is used to interpret the relationship between age and work satisfaction among 434 employees of a Federal Government agency. Distinct age-satisfaction curves are discovered among three employee groups: a U-shaped curve among nonprofessionals, an upward-sloping double-bend curve among elite professionals, and a downward sloping curve among ordinary professionals. Employee perceptions of management cl…

  • Bureaucratic Role Characteristics and Member Affective Response in Organizations

    Open Access•Gerald Zeitz•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1984•Citada por: 4•Referências: 20

This study examines the relationship between three bureaucratic role-structure dimensions and affective responses in organizations. Contrary to much theory, it is hypothesized that formal structuring of activities has a positive effect on members' satisfaction and perceived climate; consistent with bureaucratic theory, it is hypothesized that both role constraints and rule enforcement have negative effects. Results from a sample of 332 members of…

  • Hierarchical Authority and Decision-Making in Pr ofessional Organizations

    Open Access•Gerald Zeitz•ARTICLE•Administration & Society•1980•Citada por: 1•Referências: 18

Organizational researchers have attacked the rational, or bureaucratic, model of organizations and have sought to replace it with a number of different perspectives that stress informal influence, political processes, situational negotiations, or random interaction. Yet one key test that bears on the applicability of the rational model has not been systematically or thoroughly, performed: an analysis of the extent to which formal authority, in co…

  • Organizational Properties from Aggregate Data

    James R Lincoln, Gerald Zeitz•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1980•Citada por: 35•Referências: 20

In this paper, we argue that aggregate measures (means computed on distributions of individual scores) may be valid indicators of organizational properties which also enable an investigator to determine whether statistical relations among organizational measures arise from organization-level, as opposed to individual-level, causal processes. We review certain statistical aggregation issues as these pertain to organizational analysis, and we propo…
