Patient influencers’ promotion of prescription drugs on Instagram
Via two experiments, the present study examined how patient influencers’ illness disclosure in their sponsored posts of prescription drug ads predicts individuals’ persuasion knowledge and behavioral intentions. Study 1 (N = 206) revealed that influencers’ illness disclosure predicted attitudinal persuasion knowledge through transportation and parasocial interaction, further suggesting that illness disclosure reduces persuasion knowledge, causing…
Keeping up with influencers
An experiment was conducted to examine the level of social presence and the mediating role of parasocial interaction in influencer marketing. In a simulated fitness influencer’s Instagram posts, social presence significantly predicts individuals’ purchase intent toward the brand featured in the posts as well as self-efficacy, working through parasocial interactions. Parasocial interaction with influencers serves as a mediator, while influencers c…
A “Ballpark” Assessment of Social Distancing Efficiency in the Early Stages of the Covid-19 Pandemic
This paper presents an efficiency assessment of social distancing as an internationally adopted measure to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The simple framework adopted for the assessment accounts for two kinds of costs that a society may bear in a pandemic. The first is welfare loss due to infection and its consequences, and the second is welfare loss resulting from a slowdown in economic transactions. We call the first infection costs, and…
Unpacking Unboxing Video-Viewing Motivations
Drawing on the uses and gratifications (U&G) perspective, this study examines consumers’ YouTube unboxing video-viewing motivations and their influence on purchase intent. The results of a survey of 317 respondents showed a significant mediating role of parasocial interaction (PSI) with unboxers, suggesting that PSI influences viewers to consider buying products featured in the videos. Specifically, entertainment and interpersonal utility motivat…
Seeking a Sense of Belonging
Despite the vast literature on East Asian international students in higher education during the current era of globalization, few studies examine how the international migration of doctorate holders is gendered. The migration and career choices of Korean women who hold doctorates from American universities, we argue, are shaped by geographical imaginations based on the political connections between South Korea and the US and their personal experi…
Strategic CSR Communication
Based on the literature in various strategic communication disciplines, including marketing, advertising, and public relations, this 2 (company-cause fit: congruent vs. incongruent) × 2 (level of transparency: high vs. low) experiment examines message effect on trust, organizational advocacy, and skepticism in order to explore ways to effectively communicate CSR initiatives in consideration of company-cause fit and transparency. Company-cause fit…
Career–family strategies and spatial mobility among South Korean women scholars
This paper examines the mobility of female South Korean scholars and their career–family strategies for negotiating their relationships. Despite the importance of the relations and social capital of workers, previous studies on the mobility of highly skilled professionals have overlooked their social and personal relationships. South Korean women scholars consider not only career opportunities but also familial relations in the process of migrati…
Customer aggression and workplace deviance
Although customer aggression has been found to affect the well-being of employees in the service sector, few prior researchers have examined its effect on employees' workplace behavior. Thus, we examined the effect of customer aggression on positive and negative workplace deviant behaviors in service contexts, and explored whether psychological ownership moderates these relationships. Participants were 362 bankers in the financial sector within S…
Do High Schools in South Korea Need More Female Principals? The Relationship between Gender and Leadership Performance
