This paper reconstructs in detail the course leading to the inception of the Chinese material medica (CMM) research at the Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) in 1920. By analyzing the primary materials from several archives, it provides, for the first time, a historiographical account of the major events and key figures in the process. These include the China Medical Board (CMB) Commission to East Asia in 1915 that shaped the attitudes of Drs. W…

Open Access•Niti Pawar, Christy K Boscardin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2025

Introduction: Loan burden presents a significant barrier for trainees in different medical fields. However, disparities in loan burden of anesthesia trainees of underrepresented in medicine (URiM), first-generation and female-identifying backgrounds have not been studied. Moreover, it is not known whether membership in these groups is associated with well-being or life decisions after controlling for loan burden. Methods: In this cross-sectional …

  • China's Eco‐Civilisation, Climate Leviathan, and Hobbesian Energy Transition

    Open Access•David Chen•ARTICLE•Antipode•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 73

Scholars have hitherto tended to theorise China's ecological civilisation project either as a form of environmental authoritarianism or as a vision of eco‐socialism. This paper contributes to the conversation by conducting a textual analysis of Chinese scholarly discussions on eco‐civilisation. The analysis uncovers topics and themes related to both narratives of environmental authoritarianism and eco‐socialist envisioning. It also captures the s…

  • Critical Han Studies Through the Lens of Internal Colonialism

    Open Access•David Chen, Jason A Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 34

When the concept of 'internal colonialism' has been applied to China, it has often been focused on the plight of ethnic minorities. The political and cultural subordination of non-Mandarin Han groups, however, has drawn little attention. We argue that critical Han studies, by posing a challenge to the state ideology of Han ethnic unitarism, provides a theoretical arsenal capable of broadening the application of the internal colonialism framework …

  • A theory of dialectical transnational historical materialism for China’s state capitalism and the China–US rivalry

    David Chen•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 25

A new cold war seems to be looming between China and the United States. The escalating China–US rivalry calls for a more dialectical theory of international political economy that captures conflict and disintegration as an integral part of capitalist globalisation. Kees van der Pijl’s and William Carroll’s critical realist approach towards the study of transnational corporations (TNCs) and transnational capitalist class (TCC) formation has incorp…

  • Rethinking Globalization and the Transnational Capitalist Class

    Open Access•David Chen•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 3

The arrest of Meng Wanzhou and the Huawei prosecution have revealed a mounting battle for high-tech supremacy between the United States and China. The ongoing technology war and the trade war are merely one dimension of a far-reaching and accelerating imperialist rivalry. The changing reality on the world stage has urged a reconsideration of the transnational capitalist class (TCC) thesis and the theory of globalization in general. By reviewing t…

This paper provides a network analysis of federal lobbying in Canada by the fossil fuel industry over a seven-year period from January 4, 2011 to January 30, 2018, enabling a comparative examination of lobbying under the Harper Conservatives and the Trudeau Liberals. The network we uncover amounts to 'small world' of intense interaction among relatively few lobbyists/firms that control much of this economic sector and the designated public office…
