  • Stigmatized Professions and Ambiguous Subjects: Methodological Reflections from Sanitation Workers and Opioid Consumption in Sierra Leone

Open Access•Ibrahim Bangura, Ibrahim Bakarr Bangura et al.•ARTICLE•African Affairs•2024

This paper explores ethical dilemmas in relation to practices of alcohol and drug consumption in the workplace by manual pit emptiers in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Based on observations and interviews with workers, we come to understand the consumption of painkillers and gin as a mechanism to alleviate stigma, rather than an issue of addiction. Indeed, the consumption of psychoactive substances before manual pit emptying appears as a performance to …

  • Flowing toxics: E-waste field work in the Palestinian-Israeli space

    Open Access•Yoni Garb, Nelly Leblond•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2023•References: 17

We draw on several emerging literatures on contamination and waste and our own fieldwork on e-waste contamination in a Palestinian-Israeli border space to describe a “flowing” approach to toxic phenomena. We use this term as a shorthand to underscore the particular complexities of the socio-material-biological node called “toxics,” and the corresponding epistemic, methodological, and moral demands of studying them. Some episodes from typical days…

  • Fontes comprometidas: Ambiguidades e impasses pedológicos em Moçambique

    Open Access•Nelly Leblond, Fatima Mendonca•ARTICLE•Sources•2022

    Open Access•Nelly Leblond•ARTICLE•Sources•2022

  • The political role of date palm trees in the Jordan Valley: The transformation of Palestinian land and water tenure in agriculture made invisible by epistemic violence

    Open Access•Julie Trottier, Nelly Leblond et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning E Nature…•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 18

In the West Bank, date palm trees have been sweeping over the Jordan Valley at an accelerating rate since the 2000s. The current scientific literature has depicted this transformation as sustainable development. This article proposes a method to harness social sciences in a meaningful manner within the interdisciplinary study of agricultural transformation. Focusing on appropriation rather than bundles of rights, within an exploration of water an…
