Religion, Age, and Crime: Do Religious Traditions Differentially Impact Juvenile Versus Adult Violence
A growing body of empirical research demonstrates that the relative presence of religious adherents at the community-level has important relationships with rates of crime and violence. Less understood is how adherence to specific religious traditions (e.g., evangelical Protestant, Catholic, mainline Protestant) is associated with rates of crime, especially across particular age groups toward which religious traditions devote varying degrees of st…

Sources of Organizational Commitment: The Effects of Internal Labor Markets and Worker Values
Data from the 1991 General Social Survey and National Organizations Survey are used to assess how organizational commitment is structured by one “demand side,” organizational-based factor, firm internal labor markets, and one “supply side,” individual-based factor, the values/preferences of workers. Findings indicate that organizational commitment is best explained by the joint influence of these two factors rather than by their independent effec…

Marketing Deviance: The Selling of Cockfighting
We use conventional marketing concepts to examine the marketing of the deviant and stigmatized activity of cockfighting and show how the two differ. Our research is based on several years of active participant observation with cockfighters and the examination of several publications devoted to the sport. We find a paradoxical situation wherein people who compete with each other in an illegal activity must also establish their reputations for hone…

Knives and gaffs: Definitions in the deviant world of cockfighting
We examine the deviant social world of cockfighting by looking at the meanings participants give to a particular set of objects, the artificial spurs, or heels, that they attach to the birds. We find that the kind of heels cockfighters choose to “fight their birds in” defines the subworld to which they belong, with tension and hostility existing between the knife fighters and the gaff fighters

Frame Alignment Processes, Micromobilization, and Movement Participation
This paper attempts to further theoretical and empirical understanding of adherent and constituent mobilization by proposing and analyzing frame alignment as a conceptual bridge linking social psychological and resource mobilization views on movement participation. Extension of Goffinan's (1974) frame analytic perspective provides the conceptualltheoretical framework; field research on two religious movements, the peace movement, and several neig…
