Internal Migration in Sri Lanka and Its Social Consequences
This book probes features of internal migration in Sri Lanka and some of the social and political consequences of these population shifts. It examines the aspects of societal upheavals related to internal migration: unbalanced sex ratios, rising rates of suicide, and increased ethnic conflict. .

Suicide and Internal Migration in Sri Lanka
This paper examines the rise of suicide rates in Sri Lanka in recent decades and suggests that much of the increase is attributable to the disruptions caused by increased levels of internal migration. Attention is paid to suicide rates by district, sex, and age group. It is shown that, while internal migration cannot explain completely the universal rise in suicide in Sri Lanka, there is a strong association between suicide and internal migration…

The Spiral of Suicide and Social Change in Sri Lanka
The suicide rate in Sri Lanka tripled between 1955 and 1974, soaring from 6.9 to 22.1 per 100,000 population. Sharp increases were recorded for both sexes, most age groups, and all of the nation's twenty-two districts. The incidence of suicide was greatest in the age range of 15 to 29 years.
