Religion in Global Politics
One of the most resilient ideas about societal development after World War II was that nations would inevitably secularise as they modernised. However, as we come to the end of the 'secular' twentieth century, it is obvious that religion continues to be an important factor in politics around the world. The author examines the continuing importance of religion, focusing upon the regions of Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia

Religion and democratization in Africa
Two main issues form the focus of attention in this study. The first is the relationship of senior religious figures to the state in Africa and the role of the former in the region's democratization in the 1990s. The second is the political importance of ‘popular’ religions in Africa. The overall aim is to examine the relationship of religion and politics in Africa in the context of democratization, to: (1) establish the nature of the links betwe…

Tracing connections between comparative politics and globalisation
This article focuses on connections between globalisation and comparative political analysis. Traditionally the latter is concerned with domestic political actors, especially states. Globalisation, on the other hand, emphasises the variable significance of a variety of border-crossing, including transnational, actors. I argue that since the end of the Cold War five key developments—a large number of new countries; widespread political changes, es…

Transnational religious actors and international politics
This article generally examines the phenomenon of transnational religious actors and seeks to assess the claim that their activities can undermine state sovereignty. It starts from the premise that globalisation facilitates the growth of transnational networks of religious actors. Feeding off each other's ideas and perhaps aiding each other with funds, they are bodies whose main priority is the well-being and advance of their transnational religi…
Democratic consolidation in the Third World: Many questions, any answers

The possibility of democratic consolidation in Ghana
Over the last decade Ghana moved from military to democratic rule for the third time, holding elections in 1992 and 1996. Both resulted in the election of former military leader, Jerry Rawlings, as president, and his party gained a majority of parliamentary seats on both occasions. This is not a simple case of an authoritarian regime trying to legitimate itself by dubious elections. Instead, Ghana displays some of the signs of democratic consolid…
Power, politics and environmental movements in the Third World
Environmental movements in the Third World are a relatively recent phenomenon. They should be seen, not as concerned purely with environmental issues, but as manifestations of wider, usually, political concerns. Such movements tend to attract the unempowered ‐ those without the means to address their concerns in more conventional ways. Movements in India, Kenya, Indonesia, Tahiti and Nigeria are examined in the search for factors that explain the…

One‐party state, no‐party state, multi‐party state?: 35 Years of democracy, authoritarianism and development in Ghana
Ghana was the first sub‐Saharan African country to attain independence in 1957. The victorious independence party, the Convention People's Party led by Kwame Nkrumah, ruled with a Marxist orientation until 1966. Since late 1981 the country has been ruled by the PNDC government of Flt.‐Lt. Jerry Rawlings. At the onset of PNDC rule, the dominant ideology appeared to be a variant of Marxism‐Leninism. Over the next ten years, however, the regime pres…
