  • Picturing Novembrists in Paris

    Tom Young•ARTICLE•The Polish Review•2024

This essay examines a print series called Les Polonais et les Polonaises de la Révolution du 29 Novembre, 1830, a collection of just under one-hundred lithographic portraits of individuals involved in the November Uprising of 1830–1831. It was produced and authored by Józef Straszewicz (1801–1838), a revolutionary turned émigré publisher and art dealer in Paris. Serialized between 1832 and 1837, the project was described as a “Historical Gallery …

  • The ‘Autographic Self’: Facsimile Signatures and Lithographic Portraiture at the Crossroads of Liberalism, Romanticism and Nationalism, c. 1800–60

    Open Access•Tom Young•ARTICLE•Cultural History•2023

This article traces the cultural history of a portrait format popularised through the global expansion of lithographic printing. This format combined a traditional portrait vignette with a lithographic facsimile of the sitter’s signature. Such ‘facsimile-autographed’ portraits evoked the notion that sitters had physically signed their own likenesses – testifying not only to the veracity of the depiction, but displaying an indexical trace of embod…

Open Access•Bella Vivat, Rebecca Lodwick et al.•ARTICLE•Religions•2023•References: 30

From its inception palliative care has been understood as addressing four dimensions: physical, social, emotional/psychological, and spiritual/religious. However, the spiritual and/or religious element is poorly understood and under-researched, and little is known about palliative care professionals' understandings of spiritual care, or how they seek to implement spiritual care in practice. Members of the European Association of Palliative Care (…

    Open Access•Tom Young•ARTICLE•Art History•2022

This essay explores how lithographic printing connected colonial society in India to global developments in the making of middle‐class culture. It focuses on two print portrait series that the artist Colesworthy Grant (1813–80) released in illustrated periodicals: Lithographic Sketches of the Public Characters of Calcutta ; and A Series of Miscellaneous Rough Sketches of Oriental Heads . The former defined white society in Bengal according to a m…

I suggest that the recent furore over Gilley's article on colonialism raises at least three distinct issues both within academia and the wider space of public debate. The first concerns the category of 'offence', who can be offended and by what. The second concerns the nature of colonialism, its contemporary understanding and why that remains politically controversial. The third concerns possible continuities between certain aspects of colonial r…

This article examines the policies and practices of Western states and development agencies in their support of civil society in two cases: Ghana and Sierra Leone. While rather different, these cases illustrate well the typical forms of interventions that target civil society. The article argues that donor discourse about the role of civil society in the construction of good governance replicates the arguments typically found in liberal theory, a…

The paper offers a sociological explanation for the underground structures which arise in societies organized as political democracies. The case of the United States is used to explore this curious fact. The disjunction between democracy in public life and inequality in private life is resolved by the underground structures of the democratic state. In brief, as a stratified society becomes more democratic, secret police are used to destabilize so…
