  • The African Today

    Diedrich Westermann•BOOK•African Today•2018

Originally published in 1934, and inevitably a product of the time in which it was published this book nevertheless remains an important volume in African sociology and psychology. Topics such as race, economics, family and kinship, tribal organization, ritual and the supernatural, language and education are discussed in a balanced way, especially given the era of publication.

These results are so at variance from the commonly accepted scheme that a brief methodological foreword seems in order.' This is a clear and frank statement and a great promise. Until now, in spite of several attempts, no satisfactory classification of African languages has ex…

    Open Access•Diedrich Westermann•ARTICLE•Africa•1939

In 1933 a Short Guide to the Recording of African Languages was published as a Supplement to Africa in response to many requests for a publication of the kind. It later appeared as Memorandum XI in the series published by the Institute in connexion with the Journal. The Guide was intended as a first step towards the systematic recording of African languages, and in particular of those about which little or nothing is known. It has been widely use…

Opening ParagraphIn the closing phrases of the Introduction to his book, The Modern Languages of Africa, R. N. Cust says: 'The actual out-turn of Languages admitted on my Schedule represent a very small portion of the Great Unknown.' That was in 1883. To-day, more than half a century later, Africa has, linguistically as well as in other ways, ceased to be the 'Great Unknown', and yet we are far from possessing an exhaustive knowledge of the langu…

This applies pre-eminently to missionaries. They, more than any other body of men, have an interest in studying the people among whom they work. It is their aim to tran…

  • The Linguistic Situation and Vernacular Literature in British West Africa

The beginnings of a vernacular literature in languages spoken in British West Africa go back for more than a century. As early as 1815 the gospel of St. Matthew was published in Bulom; in 1816 part of St. Matthew in Susu (Soso), 1829 Genesis and part of Matthew in Mampua, a dialect of Bulom. A translation of the whole Bible appeared in the Ga language in 1866, in Twi in 1871, in Efik in 1868, and in Yoruba in 1880. Since that time there has been …

In 1926 the Government of the Gold Coast invited me to visit that country in order to advise them regarding a common script for the leading languages and on related subjects. I arrived on the Gold Coast in February 1927, and stayed there until the middle of April. As a basis for my work I had with me a draft of the proposals of the Institute in regard to the orthography of African languages. These have now been published in the Memorandum on a Pr…

The Arab scholar Ibn Batuta, who travelled in the Sudan in the fourteenth century, speaks in his report of the country of Gobar, the Gobir of to-day. Gobir must at that time have been one of the important centres of Hausaland, for again Leo Africanus, a Berber born in Granada, and a great African traveller, whose book was published in Latin in 1556, mentions the language of Gobir, which is Hausa, and which, according to him, was even then one of …
