Enhancing public health-oriented travel services
Public transportation plays a vital role in urban mobility, yet many systems lack adequate hygiene and safety measures, especially during pandemics. To address this gap, this study evaluates passenger-centric design attributes for health-oriented travel services and identifies key factors influencing user acceptance using a mixed-methods approach. The Kano Model is employed to categorize hygiene and safety requirements based on passenger preferen…

Assessment of karst rocky desertification from the local to regional scale based on unmanned aerial vehicle images
Karst rocky desertification is a major ecologic and geologic problem in Southwest China that has restricted the sustainable development of society and the economy. Many methods have been used to evaluate rocky desertification based on satellite remote sensing, but the results of these methods are affected by the heterogeneous surroundings of the karst region and the low resolution of sensors. In this study, a new method that combines satellite im…

Political equality, coalition formation, and economic performance in autocracies
Autocracies have diverse records of economic growth. This paper provides a theory of endogenous coalition formation to explain economic performance in autocracy. The nature of the ruling coalition that the autocrat relies on to rule the society and extract rents affects the degree of inclusiveness of the autocracy's political and economic institutions that ultimately determines economic performance. A stable ruling coalition has to be invasion-pr…

An Anatomy of the Chinese selectocracy
The Chinese regime is a self-contained polity that is best described by selectocracy, i.e. a polity that selects officials by a centralized mechanism. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is the selectorate. Throughout the process of reform, the party has been de-politicized, so the central government has become disinterested with regard to the conflicts in society, which enables it to adopt identity-blind and growth-enhancing policies. The selector…

Manufacturing as the key engine of economic growth for middle-income economies
This paper revisits the role of the manufacturing sector during the middle-income stage of development. By exploiting a large dataset that covers different sectors, we find that in the middle-income stage, manufacturing pulls along all the other sectors, including the services sector. A decline in manufacturing growth negatively affects the growth of all the other sectors, in both the short-run and long-run. Additionally, we attempt to identify t…
Beijing Consensus
By its initial formulation, the Beijing Consensus emphasizes China's experimental approach to policy reform, its attention to social stability, and its determination to develop asymmetric power on the international stage. But it has been reformulated by some scholars, as well as by the media, as a model representing state capitalism under an authoritarian government. This new formulation does not capture what China has done right since 1978. Chin…

Informal Institutions, Collective Action, and Public Investment in Rural China
Do informal institutions, rules, and norms created and enforced by social groups promote good local governance in environments of weak democratic or bureaucratic institutions? This question is difficult to answer because of challenges in defining and measuring informal institutions and identifying their causal effects. In the article, we investigate the effect of lineage groups, one of the most important vehicles of informal institutions in rural…

Has China passed the Lewis turning point? A structural estimation based on provincial data
Using provincial data for the period 1998–2007, this paper estimates the supply and demand functions of migrant workers in each year for a typical Chinese province in a structural framework that explicitly takes into account the Lewis turning point (LTP) in the supply function. The results are extrapolated to the national level and the turning point and the equilibrium level of migrant employment are both estimated for each year. The comparison o…

Gender Gaps in Access to Health Care in Rural China
It has been established in the literature on intrahousehold inequality in low‐income economies that the family allocates more resources to male members, who have higher market values than women do. Using recent data collected on about 8,400 people in eight Chinese provinces, this article finds that, when other factors are controlled for, prime‐age women are favored in accessing health care in their childbearing and maternal periods. Women’s curat…

Political Process and Efficient Institutional Change
The efficiency hypothesis of institutional change is formulated in a general economic setting. The validity of this hypothesis depends on the specification of the new institution and the political process governing the institutional change. The issue is formulated as an implementation problem that asks whether the hypothesis can be implemented by a game form that consists of a well-behaved political process and a new institution. A general negati…

Technological structure and its upgrading in China's exports
Based on several indexes, this article investigates technological upgrading in China's exports. It demonstrates that the whole technological contents of China's exports have been improved dramatically since the early 1980s. In the meantime, the domestic technological contents are likely experiencing a V-curve, i.e. decreasing first and then increasing later. Native enterprises grow faster than their foreign direct investment (FDI) counterparts th…

Asia–Pacific integration within a broader Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement
