A Fourth Circle of English
This paper identifies a Fourth Circle of English, fueled by technology and outsourcing, and exemplified by the Indian speech community known as ‘youngistan.’ A variety of data are examined, including YouTube and other online advertisements, social media posts and exchanges, texts, as well as secondary data. To ensure a comprehensive and empirical account, the data are analyzed using applicable frameworks of critical discourse analysis, including …
Mapping Yamunaji's scholarly tributaries
This paper recognizes and celebrates Dr. Yamuna Kachru's multiple research contributions. Continuing with the metaphor of the powerful River Yamuna that the preceding paper uses, this one explores two tributaries or, more specifically, two applications of her research, namely, the value of her contributions to the field of childhood education and to professional communication. Implications and directions for future research are also outlined

Language and Representation
Language and gender in works by female West African writers are examined in this paper. The prevalence of linguistic and ideological gendering in the corpus is illustrated, and questions raised about the rationale and functionality of the gendered representations. In addition, answers are sought to questions such as "What drives co-wives to wickedness or insanity?" and "What accounts for female rivalries, and female-female invectives, including a…
Woman Palava No Be Small, Woman Wahala No Be Small
This paper provides a linguistic analysis of depictions of female characters in selected West African fiction with a view to illustrating the role language plays in overtly and covertly conveying sexist language and ideology. Unequal representation of the genders by male and female writers is noted. Sexist language appears to be more frequently employed in female writers' works, while a covert chauvinistic ideology is more evident in male writers…

Culture, gender, and identity in cross-cultural personals and matrimonials
This paper demonstrates how different Englishes are employed in Indian matrimonials versus US personals ads. In addition to demonstrating how a knowledge of world Englishes is pertinent to interpretation of the advertisements in question, the study reported here illustrates how, on a functional-semantic level, the two categories of ads are not as different as they may appear to be. The cultural hybridity evident in several matrimonials is also ex…
Toefl to the Test
In this paper, I draw attention to the validity of the Oakland School Board's resolution on Ebonics, and to the value of ESL-based approaches to the teaching of 'Standard American English' to speakers of other dialects of American English. I do so by demonstrating the validity of comparisons made between monodialectal speakers of African-American Language (AAL)/'Ebonics' and low-level ESL students, and by illustrating the bidialectalism-instillin…
