Tourism specialization, growth stage, and economic growth
This paper investigates the nonlinear relationship between tourism and economic growth using a balanced sample of 58 countries in three continental samples (Africa, Asia, and Latin America) for the 2003–2017 period. First, we document an asymmetric threshold effect of tourism on economic growth. By utilizing an endogenous threshold regression model, we show that a single tourism threshold cutoff exists and that tourism receipts influence growth o…

The African economic growth experience and tourism receipts
By applying threshold analysis and quantile regression techniques, we investigate the linearity of the relationship between tourism receipts and economic growth. We find that a threshold exists, below and above which the relationship between tourism receipts and economic growth changes. In our sample, the threshold for tourism receipts is at 3.82% of gross domestic product. Specifically, our findings suggest that tourism receipts have a more pron…
Impact of Tourism on Economic Growth and Development in Africa
During the 1990s, Africa experienced a rise in tourist arrivals from 8.4 million to 10.6 million and a growth in receipts from US$2.3 billion to US$3.7 billion. According to the World Tourism Organization, the tourism industry in sub-Saharan Africa enjoyed a robust annual market share growth rate of 10% in 2006. In spite of this, there are few empirical studies that investigate the contributions of tourism to the economic growth and development o…
Diversification and livelihood sustainability in a semi-arid environment
This paper examines the recently growing adoption of non-pastoral livelihood strategies among the Borana pastoralists in southern Ethiopia. A large portion of the current non-pastoral participation is in petty and natural resource-based activities. Pastoral and crop production functions are estimated using the Cobb-Douglas model to analyse the economic rationale behind the growing pastoralist shift to cultivation and other non-pastoral activities…

The Determinants of Infant and Child Mortality in Developing Countries
The objectives of this paper are to: a) examine the determinants of the variations in the crude birth rates (CBR) mortality rates for the less than one year old infants (IMR) and for the less than five-year old children (CMR) b) account for the possible endogeneity or feed-back effects between the crude birth rate (CBR) and child mortality rate (CMR) c) draw conclusions based on the results and d) make some policy recommendations for reducing the…

An Estimation of the Aggregate Educational Production Function for Public Schools in Louisiana
Data at the school district level were used to estimate the relationship between basic skills test scores and various school district, family and community educational inputs. The inputs examined in the regression analysis included expenditures per student, student-teacher ratio, years of teacher's experience, along with other school-related and socioeconomic variables. Expenditures per student are significantly related to basic skills test resul…
Public Assistance and Job Search Behavior of the Rural Poor–Evidence from the Mississippi Delta
This study explores whether prolonged welfare experience reduces the job search commitment of the unemployed. More specifically, an attempt is made to determine whether participation in a government assistance program induces the unemployed to prolong their job search activities, either through reduced search effort or by asking a higher reservation (acceptance) wage. The data were obtained from a semi-structured interview with 120 food stamp rec…
