Cities and Development
Considerable debate in geography around the world has centered on the relationship between cities and both economic and social development. In moving away from conventional geographical divides between Global North and Global South scholarship at the intersections between cities and development, recent research has emphasized how varied the processes of urban development are in different parts of the world, and even within one country's cities. Y…

Cities in Contemporary Africa
Urban Africa: Changing contours of survival in the city, edited by AbdouMaliq Simone and Abdelghani Abouhani
This edited volume is one of six books published or forthcoming within Codesria's exciting series on ‘Africa in the New Millennium’. Scholars from across the continent produced its 10 chapters. As is often the case with Codesria projects, the book works hard to overcome the major linguistic divide of Africanist social science by bringing together in one volume both Anglophone and Francophone urban studies. Although the book itself is entirely in …
African Urban Economies: Viability, vitality, or vitiation? edited by Deborah Fahy Bryceson and Deborah Potts
This thorough and well-composed volume provides a comprehensive introduction to the key issues of urban development in contemporary eastern and southern Africa. The book is quite multi-disciplinary, with contributions from scholars in sociology, development studies, geography, architecture, psychology, anthropology, gender studies and international studies included. It has 14 chapters; of which, four were written by one of the two co-editors. Mos…
Tanzanians in the Land of Oz: Diaspora and transnationality in Wichita, Kansas
Studies of recent African immigration to the USA are part of increased scholarly concern for new diasporas and transnationality. Geographers' interests in how particular US settings impact upon African immigrants' experiences and how immigrants transform those settings can be enriched through studies of smaller communities, and their impacts on and experiences in the US outside of the main host cities. This case study of Tanzanians in Wichita, Ka…
The unauthorized city: Late colonial Lusaka and postcolonial geography
This paper uses a case study of Lusaka, Zambia, to interrogate several aspects of the literature on postcolonial geography. I deploy two concepts from African postcolonial studies – the idea of exclusionary democracy and the concept of the domestication of difference – and assess the continuity in their applicability to Lusaka. More specifically, I examine the contention that both the political and the planning dynamics of the last years of colon…
Colonial and Postcolonial Modernities in Two African Cities
Narrative representations of revolutionary Zanzibar
Political ecology and urbanisation: Zanzibar's construction materials industry
In the 1990s, there has been a marked upsurge in scholarly and practical interest in the relationships between urban development and environmental protection in Africa. It is apparent that analyses which take simultaneous account of economic, political and environmental aspects of urban development issues are an essential and yet under-represented facet of this upsurge. This article argues for a regional political ecology approach to African urba…

Making the Socialist City of Zanzibar
The urban-planning strategy of the revolutionary government for the Ng'ambo neighborhoods of Zanzibar City was dominated by a grand vision. Ng'ambo, which literally means Other Side, was slated to become the physical embodiment of the revolution's social experiment. However, the socialist grand vision fared no better in Zanzibar than did its weaker version on the Tanzanian mainland in creating an egalitarian urbanism. Specifically, I examine the …
