  • African American Performance and Theater History

    Barbara Lewis•ARTICLE•Theatre Journal•2002

To be or not to be part of the system has consistently been at issue for African Americans both in and out of the arts. Harry J. Elam, Jr. points to this ambivalent status when he writes in the introduction to African American Performance and Theater History: A Critical Reader that the matter of race in America "is inherently theatrical" (4). African Americans are seen as eminently capable of performing. Much of what they performed as strategic m…

    Open Access•Barbara Lewis, Barbara A Lewis•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1998

Descriptions of skeletal pathological conditions evident in the prehistoric Tchefuncte adolescent 16ST1-14883b are clarified. The basis is reaffirmed for assigning to the described pathological conditions a diagnostic perspective of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis or juvenile Lyme disease—a disease that mimics juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in its arthritic presentation—rather than of assigning them as representative of juvenile onset ankylosing spo…

  • Speech Production Skills of Nuclear Family Members of Children with Phonology Disorders

    Open Access•Barbara Lewis, Barbara A Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 48

The speech production skills of 38 school-aged siblings and 94 parents of children with phonology disorders were assessed by administering tasks involving the repetition of multisyllabic real and nonsense words, and “difficult-to-articulate” phrases and sentences. Results demonstrated that speech production, as measured by these tasks, continues to improve into adulthood. Furthermore, family members who reported histories of childhood speech and …

  • Treponematosis and Lyme borreliosis connections

    Open Access•Barbara Lewis•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1994•Cited by: 4•References: 66

A convergence of evidence from macroscopic, radiographic and histologic examination indicates that treponemal infection was present in the 16ST1 Tchefuncte Indian burial population, dated 500 B.C. to 300 A.D. Pattern and nature of lesions suggests that chronic infection induced by variants of the spirochete Treponema pallidum , causing endemic syphilis and/or yaws, resulted in third‐stage osseous response. It is suggested that Tchefuncte Indians …
