The Black Museum of Words
This article explores the formal and generic innovations of William J. Wilson's serialized short story, "Afric-American Picture Gallery," which was published in the Anglo-African Magazine in seven installments between February 1859 and October 1859. Beginning with a creative critical pastiche of Wilson's style, I locate Wilson within a tradition of Black ekphrastic writers like Melvin Tolson and Margaret Danner who contribute to a space I name th…
Twelve tips for small group teaching 2.0 – Rebooted for remote and HyFlex learning
Small group teaching (SGT) is not just the delivery of teaching to a small number of learners - it is, instead, underpinned by learner-learner interaction, discussion, and collaboration. The advent of readily available technology, combined with the need to maintain learner and teacher safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, has led to a surge in remote learning, and significant increases in synchronous hybrid learning environments, also known as HyF…

Patient experiences of the urgent cancer referral pathway—Can the NHS do better? Semi‐structured interviews with patients with upper gastrointestinal cancer
BACKGROUND: Timeliness is viewed as a key feature of health-care quality. Internationally, this is challenging. In England, cancer waiting time targets are currently not being met. For example, between 2015 and 2018 only 71% of patients with upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancer started treatment within the recommended 62 days of referral. OBJECTIVE: We explored patients' experiences to identify areas for service improvement. DESIGN: Semi-structure…
“About sixty per cent I want to do it”
BACKGROUND: Funders, policy-makers and research organizations increasingly expect health researchers in the UK to involve patients and members of the public in research. It has been stated that it makes research "more effective, more credible and often more cost efficient." However, the evidence base for this assertion is evolving and can be limited. There has been little research into how health researchers feel about involving people, how they …
Decision aids for people facing health treatment or screening decisions
BACKGROUND: Decision aids are interventions that support patients by making their decisions explicit, providing information about options and associated benefits/harms, and helping clarify congruence between decisions and personal values. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of decision aids in people facing treatment or screening decisions. SEARCH METHODS: Updated search (2012 to April 2015) in CENTRAL; MEDLINE; Embase; PsycINFO; and grey literatur…
To Be is to Be Seen
Critics have noted the palpable influence of existentialism on the plays of Athol Fugard—an influence that Fugard acknowledges in his Notebooks as having resulted from his reading of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. Through a treatment of Fugard’s major plays—in particular, The Blood Knot, Boesman and Lena, and The Island—the essay examines the descriptive possibilities engendered by the synthesis of the existential with the postcolonial via th…

Shared Decision Making
The principles of shared decision making are well documented but there is a lack of guidance about how to accomplish the approach in routine clinical practice. Our aim here is to translate existing conceptual descriptions into a three-step model that is practical, easy to remember, and can act as a guide to skill development. Achieving shared decision making depends on building a good relationship in the clinical encounter so that information is …
Impressionnisme(s) aujourd’hui
Implementing shared decision making in the NHS
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: During thyroidectomy incomplete resection of the thyroid gland may occur. This complicates the imaging surveillance of these patients as residual thyroid needs to be distinguished from local recurrence. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if multiphasic multi-detector computed tomography (4D-MDCT) can differentiate residual nonmalignant thyroid tissue and recurrent thyroid carcinoma after thyroidectomy. M…

Doctor-patient interaction in a randomised controlled trial of decision-support tools
Assessing patients' preferences for treatments for angina using a modified repertory grid method
Reasons underpinning patients' preferences for various angina treatments
Objective To elicit patients’ preferences for the treatment of angina. Design Angina patients were interviewed in order to elicit their personal reasons underlying preferences for various treatment options. Interviews followed a general repertory grid technique, in which seven treatment options were presented to patients in triads. Treatments considered ranged from medication to invasive revascularization therapies, with a ‘no treatment’ option. …
