Toward a Global History of the Nuclear Age
The environmental history of the nuclear enterprise has grown increasingly important, not the least because of the strong conviction that an ongoing, and self-proclaimed “renaissance” in nuclear energy must be a major part of world energy scenarios in the battle against global warming and the need to abandon carbon-based energy production. This article suggests a number of ways to take advantage of the recently available primary sources by using …
Women, Reactors, and Nuclear Weapons
This article considers the Soviet Union's successful efforts to employ more women specialists in nuclear science and technology, from the Bolshevik revolution in 1917 and the Soviet atomic bomb project to the Cold War and the present. Despite their contributions to building a Cold War military machine, women rarely reached the pinnacle of the scientific enterprise due to persistent views about their lesser capabilities as specialists. After the c…
Trust, distrust and radioactive waste management in contemporary Russia
Trust in public institutions in Russia is notoriously low. Yet trust in nuclear energy is, on the contrary, very high, with two-thirds of the population supporting its continued development. To understand this apparent paradox this article explores the meanings of trust with regard to the recently started process of siting repositories for radioactive waste (RW) in Russia as they are articulated in corporate and social contexts, in particular in …
Eternal Care
In this article, we examine how human interactions with nuclear waste, with special regard to responsibilities and temporalities, have changed over time. Based primarily on historical and contemporary accounts, including interviews, we trace the history of how radioactive residue has been conceptualized and handled in Soviet and post- Soviet Russia and Sweden, from the SecondWorldWar to the present. By juxtaposing the practices and perspectives o…

From Legacy to Heritage
This article examines Russia’s post‐Soviet efforts to deal with military nuclear waste that has been accumulating since the dawn of the nuclear age. It focuses on two major areas affected by radioactive waste mismanagement: the extensive territories in the Ural region polluted by the Maiak Production Association and nuclear waste dumps in the Arctic. The article traces public debates about the remediation of waste that initially met with resistan…
Nuclear dreams and realities in contemporary Russia and Ukraine
This article examines the evolution of the nuclear enterprises in Russia and Ukraine after the break-up of the USSR in 1991 to the present and contributes to better understanding of interrelation between large-scale technologies and politics. It compares how economic crises and recovery, political considerations, and nuclear imaginaries – visions of the role that nuclear power will play in conceptions of a national future – have determined the di…
The Chernobyl Nuclear Accident and Identity Strategies in Belarus
The collapse of the Soviet Union coincided with, and was partly precipitated by, the public revelation of the true scale of the Chernobyl nuclear accident. In the late 1980s, the authorities of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic had to manage the impact of the substantial radioactive contamination of the republic’s territory along with the strong popular dissent that resulted from the three-year cover-up of its true consequences by Soviet o…
